The Nokia 7020: Style on a Budget

Sunday, July 26th, 2009
Nokia-7020-pink-frontAlong with the Nokia 2720 Fold and the Nokia 2730 Classic, Nokia intends to release the 7020 towards the latter part of 2009. Together, these three mobiles are Nokia’s attempt to establish itself in the entry level handset which has recently been dominated by competitors such as Samsung. What sets the Nokia 7020 apart is that aside from all the notable features of the handset, the style it packs in actually comes at really affordable price. Read on to see why the 7020 has the potential to bring Nokia back in the map of this particular market segment.
Stylish and Sexy
The 7020 will come in a variety of four shiny and eye-catching colours: graphite, hot pink, silver, and blue. Although it may be catered more for the ladies, guys out there need not worry as the other colour combinations make the 7020 a stylish mobile with a masculine touch. It builds on Nokia’s success with previous clamshell models but this time around it has added a unique twist on the handset’s outer display. Aside from the 2.2-inch internal colour display, the 7020 also has an external secondary display that blends in seamlessly with the outer part of the shell. However, not only does this screen come with a 128 x 160-pixel resolution but it also comes equipped with a handy stardust effect animation that can also be activated by tapping gently on the external display.

Reasonable Price Tag

Although it has not yet been confirmed experts state that the Nokia 7020 will have a price tag of around £80 once it is released. Users wouldn’t need to worry about digging deep into their pockets to stay in fashion through their mobile phones. This is definitely a reasonable price to pay for a mobile that is not only fully functional but extremely tasteful as well.

Sony Ericsson T707 Elle: Looks of a Luxury Phone, Features of a Business Device

Saturday, July 25th, 2009
Maria-Sharapova-T707One of the most common trends in mobile phone design is to incorporate flashy and elaborate detailing because, naturally, showy devices get attention. It is very rare to find a beautiful phone that is also packed with useful features. Sony Ericsson follows a different route by offering a mobile phone that is striking both in aesthetics and functionality.

Let’s start with the most substantial features, shall we? The Sony Ericsson T707 Elle comes with 3G connectivity plus the Access NetFront Web browser which allows for a seamless Web experience. Apart from being able to perform a variety of Internet-based tasks, you can proceed with your calls while downloading videos, games and music in the background.

SE-T707-ThreeMessaging features are also impressive. You can send pictures, videos, sound clips through email no matter where you are located. This unit is equipped with a GPS so you have access to Google Maps. The T707 Elle has a practical organizer that includes a calendar, task list, alarm clock and timer just to mention some.

The T707 Elle isn’t sparing on entertainment features as well. There is music and video player and an FM radio. You can enjoy 3D and Java games on your device and you can even watch YouTube videos on the phone.

The Sony Ericsson T707 Elle is hard to ignore as it comes in radiant colors plus it showcases pulsating light effects. These light effects are alerts that you assign to callers so you know which of your friends is calling you.

Some users may contend that the T707 Elle might be in trouble when placed side by side with touchscreen phones such as the LG Cookie or the Samsung Tocco Lite as touchphones are the rave right now. But the Sony Ericsson device will surely exceed expectations especially when it comes to features. The T707 Elle will be released in the second quarter but no pricing details have been disclosed.

Spyware on UAE BlackBerrys

Friday, July 24th, 2009

surveillance_250x251Etisalat, a mobile phone operator in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), issued a software update last week to its 150,000 BlackBerry users. The update, purportedly from BlackBerry, was intended to solve a problem with the transition from 2G to 3G networks, claimed Etisalat. The software update, however, which was installed by a large number of Etisalat’s BlackBerry customers was soon discovered to make the devices virtually unusable due to a significantly reduced battery life. When the problem was investigated it was found that the software was not an official update from BlackBerry at all, but a piece of spyware developed by US surveillance company SS8.

SS8 claims it is one of the world’s leading companies developing “communication intercepts” and “surveillance solutions”. The Silicon-Valley based company is known for making intrusive applications to infringe on personal privacy and there has been concern over why Etisalat would be pushing this insidious software onto their customers. What’s more worrying, for people in the UAE at least, is that Etisalat is a state owned company and could be an indication of the UAE government trying to implement autocratic surveillance policies by closely monitoring the communications of their citizens.

The ‘performance enhancing’ update was claimed by Etisalat to be an official BlackBerry patch, although BlackBerry manufacturers Research in Motion (RIM) have denounced the software claiming they had nothing to do with either its development or distribution and in no way encourage their customers to install that patch. RIM have made a removal application freely available on their website after concerns that the initial Etisalat removal instructions didn’t remove the spyware at all, raising even more concerns. This incident of domestic surveillance might never have come to light were it not for the fact that the SS8 software was so badly written it caused the BlackBerry devices to become unusable.

Samsung S5600: High-End Features, Mid-Range Price

Friday, July 24th, 2009
samsung-s5600Samsung recently launched two of its recent additions to their touchscreen phone line-up that are set to be pitted against the LG Cookie. One of the devices is the Samsung S5600 and whilst the mobile phone is being marketed as a mid-range unit, it does pack some features that you can consider high-end.

Samsung-S5230-and-S5600Samsung incorporated the same user interface on the S5600 that they put on the S8300 only this UI has certain improvements on it. TouchWiz, as it is referred to, enables S5600 users to make use of widgets – mini applications that you can place on the homescreen to personalise the look of your phone. It also comes with a feature called the Screen Gesture Lock which allows for synchronized phone unlock and application opening. All you have to do is assign a letter to an application and when you draw that letter on the screen, it opens the phone and the application that you want to access.

The Samsung S5600 also boasts of two finger-optimised galleries. You can access pictures by sweeping your finger across them without referring back to the photo list. As an alternative, you can also view pictures through the PhotoBrowser by accessing its icon on the menu. Because the S5600 has an accelerometer, it is easy to switch to landscape mode when looking at pictures plus, the screen automatically rotates the photographs according to the direction in which the phone is held.

Another advanced feature of the phone is its GPS which allows for geo-tagging and access to Google Maps. It also sports a 3 megapixel camera which is enhanced with features such as LED flash, autofocus and smile shutter. The S5600 has 3G HSDPA connectivity as well as Bluetooth, EDGE and GPRS for fast Internet browsing.

Samsung will release the S5600 this May and though there isn’t any official information on pricing, the handset will probably be in the £160 to £200 range.

It will work on Professional Windows Mobile 6.1 and have a complete QWERTY keyboard. It is expected that the Omnia Pro, will be available in the UK market by October.

This handset was first seen as the Samsung Louvre, but it has been renamed as the Samsung Omnia Pro B7610. The main difference when Omnia Pro B7610 and the B3720 when compared is the total design of the QWERTY keypad. Omnia Pro B7610 comes with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard while the B7320 has the QWERTY keypad design which one will see in the Nokia E-Series and the Blackberries’.

Nokia Surge in Europe

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Nokia-6760-Slide_42329_1The soon to be released Nokia 6760 Slide has already been released in the US as the Nokia Surge and has had a mixed response. Although some people have been sceptical of its unconventional design, others have highly enjoyed its list of features that are geared primarily towards messaging and social networking. Nokia had decided to release the Surge in America first after it had been receiving criticism for focusing too much of its attention on Europe. The 6760 Slide uses a side sliding design which when operated reveals a full QWERTY keyboard underneath that is ideal for typing emails or writing messages.

The 6760 Slide comes with support for Exchange and a whole range of email services, as well as supporting Google Talk and MS Messenger. There are special apps for quick and easy access to services such as Twitter and Facebook and the keyboard is ideal for all these purposes. The Surge release in the US featured a 2 megapixel camera but this has been upgraded to 3.2 megapixels for the 6760 Slide. However there is no autofocus or flash for the camera, nor any other features, that make this camera not very effective by today’s standards.

The 6760 Slide features good multimedia support as well as an FM radio, although Nokia have decided to use 2.5mm audio jack rather than a more conventional 3.5mm one much may annoy some music fans.

The 6760 Slide is a decent phone for social networking and for many people that find this important the 6760 Slide would be a good choice despite being put off by its somewhat unconventional design. The 6760 Slide is to be released soon in black, with white and red versions to be released at a later date.

Users shouldn’t have any problem reading and editing documents as the Quickoffice suite is also installed in the E52.
