Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Nokia X6The New Offer

The Nokia X6 is the newest offering from Nokia and it is shaping up to be one of its best releases ever. This is a mobile phone that takes mobile entertainment to another level. Not only does it have the entertainment power of a small home entertainment system, it also has the beauty and style of an elegant touchscreen phone. Truly, this offer from Nokia is something special and is something that will push other so-called entertainment phones into early retirement.

The Design

When talking about the design, one cannot ignore the fact that this mobile phone is only 13.8mm thin. This thinness adds a layer of elegance and sophistication to complement its young, and hip design. It also has it 5.0-megapixel lens positioned at the bottom, making it look more and more like a digital camera when seen from behind. Unfortunately, Nokia had to lose the microSD card slot but its huge internal memory and thin structure more than makes up for this loss.

The Applications

First, this mobile phone has an impressive music and video player, which is only enhanced by the fact that it also comes with a 3.5mm headphone audio jack, and a 3.2-inch touchscreen that can display videos on a landscape orientation. It also has a great and fast mobile Internet browser, easy access to some social networking sites, over 20 shortcuts to place all over the homescreen, email support, Bluetooth connectivity, Nokia Maps, and other Ovi Services. It also comes preloaded with great games and also has a lot of downloadable content, especially for music, since this is a “comes with Music” phone.

Add the fact that this also comes with other features that typically come with touchscreen smartphones and you have one offer that can take the market by storm. This entertainment phone from Nokia will surely make a lot of people happy, allowing them to make their entertainment needs fully mobile.

T Mobile Starts Unveils Recycling App

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

RecycleToday T Mobile announced a new mobile application called the “Recycle Guide” which is designed to help users understand what and where they can recycle.

The application will help people know not only what they can recycle at home, but also when they are out and about anywhere within the United Kingdom. People will be able to locate their nearest recycling point, letting them reduce and recycle the waste they are producing. It is available for download on a number of different handsets including BlackBerry and Android powered smartphones, as well as the new T Mobile Pulse handset.

The application is the result of a partnership between the T Mobile network and Valak, which offers services to more than 3,000 businesses of varying size in the United Kingdom on recycling legislation. The application makes use of the largest database of recycling locations in the UK and it is hoped it will assist in tackling the problem of the 31 million tonnes of trash, (a weight equivalent to 3 and a half million double decker busses,) that piles into our landfills each and every year.

It is a perfect application for people who aren’t sure where or what they can recycle. “Whether it’s after moving house, or when heading off to a new city for university. It’s also perfect for those setting off on a self catering or caravanning holiday in the UK, who don’t want their break from work to be a break from recycling,” accord to the company’s website.

We think it is a great step towards helping the community in general become more environmentally conscious, something especially important in an age where being green is recognized as being of ever increasing importance.

WebOS 1.2 – What To Expect

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

webosThe Official Palm Blog has released a list of features we can expect in the new webOS 1.2.

For starters, Palm Synergy has been improved to allow users to sync their LinkedIn contacts, something previously unavailable; meaning that information from your contacts LinkedIn profiles, such as job titles, will now show up on your Palm Pre contact list. The update also makes room for some new variations of instant messaging contacts. On a side note, the more business minded webOS 1.2 users will be able to make use of support for heterogenous EAS policies.

There is also the addition of a filter allowing you to search whichever email folder you are currently browsing through, letting you enter a search term to find whichever message you are looking for quickly and easily.

After feedback from users indicated that they wanted the ability to download files directly in their mobile phone internet browsers, they have been given just that. (We think Palm taking their users feedback into account is great, and this feature is sure to be a real crowd pleaser.)

You will now also be able to download MP3 tracks from the Amazon music store using either Wi-Fi or WLAN connectivity – another major internet related plus – as well as being able to tap a phone number which is connected to a calendar note and dial it from there, as well as an added function to pause a podcast and have it resume from where you left off by default.

The final feature of real interest to us is the new ability to copy and paste text from web pages and emails – something a lot of users have been looking for since the beginning.

All in all a great update to a great OS – expect to be pleased.

O2 Proud To Have Been First UK iPhone Provider

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

O2 LogoThe O2 mobile phone network in the UK decided to give a statement regarding the end of its exclusive partnership with Apple regarding the iPhone, which ceased on Monday as Orange announced it would now be stocking the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, before Vodafone also announced that it will be making the same move today. Everyone was wondering exactly how O2 would react to the news of not only one, but two competitors now moving in on what was up until this their domain.

The company issued a short statement, “We’re proud that we’ve been able to offer an exclusive iPhone deal to our 20 million customers for the last two years. We always knew that iPhone exclusivity was for a limited period of time, but our relationship with Apple continues and will be an ongoing success. We have over 1 million iPhone customers and they remain very important to us.”

Although O2 has lost it’s exclusive deal when it comes to the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS it is still able to offer its customers a wide range of different smartphone models, and is expected to soon have even more available for purchase. As we announced earlier in the week one of the mobile phones to soon be found on the O2 network will be the Palm Pre, which is coming on the 16th of October.

There is a rumour floating around which we cannot yet confirm that O2 may be able to nab the upcoming high end HTC Leo, a device running under the Windows Mobile operating system, that is sure to be incredibly popular. Stay tuned, we’ll be giving you an update when it can be confirmed or denied!

Nokia X3In the last quarter of this year you will see coming into the trendy music phone market, Nokia’s new baby, the Nokia X3.  It’s a great looker with stylish elegance that easily makes it a fashion phone.  But what makes it stand out is its music listening features that are expected to be the hallmark for Nokia’s new line of X series handsets starting with the X3 and its bigger brethren, the X6.

Delivering a Handset Listening Experience on a Budget

3 Customers To Become “Agents”

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

3_logo3 Mobile is launching a new initiative to get their customers to promote their network – by letting them become 3 “agents” who will paid £5 for each sim card they are able to get other mobile phone users to connect to the carrier.

The company effectively wants its customers to use free social networking sites to promote it in return for money – something that will appeal to a lot of people who are struggling to make a buck at the moment.

3 Mobile will pay out once the user they refer connects their new sim card, meaning no one will be able to sign up themselves posing as a new customer then simply avoid activating the new sim card. The customers who are involved in the promotion will be able to receive each of their £5 payments directly into their PayPal account, which makes sense as the whole practise will be conducted over the internet.

Although being marketed as an easy way for customers to earn money from the company, and allow 3 Mobile to “give something back” to their users, it doesn’t seem quite as innovative to us as some of the marketing gimmicks we’ve seen other mobile phone companies serve up in the past.

There is also some concern that with these “agents” promoting 3 left right and centre that the cost of any mobile related advertisement on social networking websites such as Facebook will see a sharp rise in cost per click – meaning that other businesses and individuals promoting their own websites will likely suffer.

While it may seem like an easy way to make some fast money, with, for example, 1000 new sellers out there, don’t be surprised to pay up to £2 for a potential user to click an ad – or, if you are a user of a social networking service, prepare to be flooded with “Buy a 3 sim card now!” spam.

HulloMail Announces BlackBerry App

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Blackberry Curve 8900S1If you own a BlackBerry mobile phone and live in the US or the UK then there is a new app available for your handset from HulloMail; a hybrid email slash voicemail communications technology. The new application arrives as an integrated voice email program, which will convert regular old voicemails into digital MP3 files, letting users store them on their mobile phones as files for as long as they want to – we thinks this is a great idea as almost all of us have had either an important address left on our voicemail or an important announcement at some point that frankly, we like the idea of holding onto for a while.

Besides that sweet bit of functionality the service is also set of offer a simple way of managing voicemail from almost any mobile phone, as is very much designed to replace traditional voicemail technologies currently in use. As for the app made specifically for the BlackBerry,it is compatible with the BlackBerry Tour, BlackBerry Bold and the BlackBerry Curve 8900 handsets and is lready available for download on the HulloMail website – the company says there are plans to make it available soon on the BlackBerry App World as well.

When BlackBerry users download the application they will be able to receive and play back voice emails on their mobile phones, permanent notifications on missed calls, and sharing, keeping as well as deleting voicemail options, plus a series of features designed for personalisation.

The service, while only offering certain choice functionalities to BlackBerry model handsets currently, is sure to appeal to a wide range of users, so we will be keeping our eyes peeled just in case it pops up in any other app stores in the coming months.

O2 Responds To iPhone On Orange

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

iPhone OrangeAs the news came that Orange was soon to start selling the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, phones previously exclusive to the O2 network in the UK, O2 has confirmed that it will continue to stock the mobile phone.

Since the launch of the iPhone in 2007 the O2 network has been able to offer the handset to their 20 million customers, but as one O2 spokesperson said, “We always knew that iPhone exclusivity was for a limited period of time, but our relationship with Apple continues and will be an ongoing success.” – We cant help but wonder if they will feel the same way when they are forced to start battling it out with Orange for users looking to buy their first iPhone.

Currently O2 have over 1 million iPhone customers and according to the company they remain very important. O2 has said that they want, both now and in the future, to offer their customers only the best handsets, including their recent addition to the line up of the Palm Pre.

Recently O2 has come under fire due to failures it its data provision, which has come as real blow to the network, and the news that it will now be competing with Orange when it comes to selling customers the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS is another knock that the company really don’t need right now.

However, when Orange begins stocking the iPhones next month it will anything but a blow to consumers; they will now have a choice of provider as well as, we hope, some much more reasonable contracts.

Stay tuned – as soon as there is an official announcement on price made by Orange we will be sure to update you.

The Nokia N97 Mini For a Wider N97 Market

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Nokia N97 MiniThe Nokia N97 gets a little brother with the new Nokia N97 Mini.  This trimming down is emerging to be product strategy that Nokia is adopting for successful upscale mobile phones like coming out with a smaller E63 brother to the E71 and the cheaper 5300 Xpress Music to the 5800.    So, how little is Mini compared to the regular N97?  Apart from sporting the same set of technical wonders for a slider touchscreen smartphone, here’s how the two compare.

Physical Form

Both handsets sport full QWERTY side slider Touchscreen form with just the following differences.

The Mini’s QWERTY keyboard tilts and slides but takes out the dedicated navigation pad in the regular N97.  It’s 113 x 52.5 x 14.2 mm size is smaller compared with the 117.2 s 55.3 x 15.9 mm dimensions of the regular N97.  It also weighs lighter at 138g compared with the 150 grams of the bigger N97.

The N97 has a larger 3.6” display reduced to 2.9” in the Mini.  But with the same VGA resolution at 16 million colors, the N97 Mini comes out with a more brilliant screen.

Memory

It sports an 8 GB internal memory while its bigger brother has a more generous 32 GB.   Both gets microSD expansion slot, nevertheless.

Application

Both handsets run on the same latest Symbian S60 operating system, the more recent N97 Mini comes with more screen widgets and a more updated Ovi Maps.

Battery Life

It’s a bit disappointing that the smaller Mini sports a mini powered battery as well.  And this accounts for its shorter life.  The Nokia N97 Mini uses a smaller 1200 mAh Lithium-Ion battery while the more powerful N97 has 1500 mAh that makes it lasts longer on the same set of features.

Pricing

Priced at €450, the smaller Nokia N97 Mini is €100 cheaper once it gets to its markets during the last quarter of this year.

The Vodafone 360 H1 – On Its Way To The UK

Monday, September 28th, 2009

Vodafone 360 H1The Vodafone 360 H1 is an amazingly slick touchscreen mobile phone designed by Samsung especially the new Vodafone 360 service.

The new service plans to integrate all social networking websites, contacts, email and multimedia all into one place. It is a replacement for the 7 year old Vodafone Live, which launched way back in 2002. The service will be available on four different smartphones made by Nokia upon their launch, as well as the Vodafone 360 H1 mobile phone – a custom handset made for the service.

The H1 is truly a different breed of mobile device; with all the Android powered handsets flooding the market lately, the H1 is based on Linux and running the LiMo, (otherwise known as Linux “Mobile”,) operating system. Although a lot of you wont be familiar with the OS, it was actually used on the Motorola RAZR2 V8 – so without knowing it, you may have already experienced it.

The Vodafone 360 H1 has got quite a lot of bang for your buck; a 3.5 inch touchscreen with a good resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, a 5 mega pixel camera with built in flash and auto focus as well as GPS functionality.

With a multimedia player that supports most audio formats, including MP3, WMA and AAC alongside its 8 GB and 16 GB memory, (depends on model,) and the option to add a microSD card it really does have a lot on offer.

Vodafone has announced that the 360 H1, along with the 360 service itself, will be available before Christmas this year in the United Kingdom – which is good because with its attractive design and built in functionality with the fun new 360 service, it is sure to be on a lot of people’s wishlists this year.
