Nokia’s New Ad Encourages Online Presence, I’m Not Impressed

Nokia AdI do get the point of the new Nokia video. If you have not seen it, I will spare you the misery. The scene opens with a groom and his best man and other buddies wasted after an obvious wild night. Honestly, if they could not have been any more subtle, they should have just placed a banner with the words “stag party” on the back drop. So fine, scene is established. Obviously, these men are suffering from hangovers and are late for the wedding ceremony. They get dressed in a rush, picking off the assorted mess they have made and make it to church. The punch line is supposed to be the point where they realize that they are in the wrong ceremony. Apparently, the wedding venue has been changed and the men were supposed to have been notified through mobile internet, blah-blah-blah. Yeah right.

First off, before we start off with the loop holes, this ad is not even remotely funny. If you found yourself laughing at the video, go seek professional help. The delivery is too slow and too bland. The scenes take too long to unfold and they could have put in a lot more for the one minute and half of video length. Then we get to the part where Nokia is trying to convince us that we should stay online. Who goes online in the middle of stag party in the first place? Why did they not inform the groom and his entourage that the ceremony has been moved at an earlier date? Lastly, did any of these men even have mobile phones in the first place?

If these men had phones, they would have called on their way to the ceremony. Not a single one of them was shown to be preparing their mobile devices nor was it even shown that they forgot their devices. With ads like these, no wonder people make fun of Nokia.
