Sony Ericsson announces Xperia X10

Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10Originally thought to be the Xperia X3, Sony Ericsson has now officially announced their new Xperia handset although it has taken a jump of 7 places to 10. Rumours are circulating that the Xperia X10 may have undergone this name change to avoid confusion with a new phone from Nokia that is also known as the X3 (released together with the X6). Whether it means that these two numbers will be permanently excluded from the Xperia line remains to be seen.

Despite undergoing the last-minute name change the announced specifications still remain true to the information that has been doing the rounds online for the last few months. The X10 is an Android phone and it does come with a superfast 1GHz Snapdragon processor. The X10 is the only phone in the works at the moment with this winning combination, besides the soon to be released Acer Liquid.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10The Android OS will receive an overhaul with Sony Ericsson’s own skin known as ‘Rachael’ (originally thought to be a possible name for the phone itself). The latest Xperia has a very spacious 4″ capacitive screen and a very desirable 8.1 megapixel camera (with LED flash included). While having a top of the line display, camera and processor the X10 does not scrimp on other features as there is full 3G and Wi-Fi support also.

The new Rachael interface (or User eXperience (UX)) will feature two new Sony Ericsson services known as Timescape and Mediascape. Timescape is Sony Ericsson’s take on a feature that more and more phone companies are working to include on their phones, which attempts to integrate information from various sources such as your contact list, SMS inbox and online services like Facebook and Twitter into one easy to manage interface. This sort of integration seems to be all the rage at the moment and it remains to be seen how Sony Ericsson’s effort will compare to the likes of Motorola‘s Motoblur. The official Sony Ericsson press release places a release date somewhere in the first quarter of 2010, so start saving now.
