HTC Prepares the Espresso

AndroidWe know for a fact that the Hero will be getting a new device in the series. But whether this is the HTC Espresso remains to be proven.

While it is most probable that HTC would make a lite version of a successful device (just like the Galaxy Spica which succeeded the Galaxy), it is also possible that there is another device that could carry the Hero mantle.

HTC’s Patrik Andersson (Sweden Executive); stated that HTC will be producing plenty of Android devices next year, and one of those will certainly be a new Hero phone. The best time for us to confirm this will be at next year’s Mobile World Congress on February 2010.

In the meanwhile, we can all enjoy the information leaked about HTC’s new device.

The big scoop comes in the form of a leaked XML file that lists the HTC Espresso. Specs wise, despite apparently being a GSM device, the HTC Espresso mirror the HTC Hero.  Both devices run on a 528 MHz Arm processor and both have 320 x 480 screens. In fact, aside from the physical keyboard, the two devices could have been one and the same.

Is HTC arming up for the coming Android wars of 2010? There is plenty of speculation regarding the direction and plans of Android developer Google –who has recently announced that they are also planning their own device. In addition, newer versions of the Android OS are being released (the source for the version 2.0 was recently distributed while 2.1 is about to be launched). Also HTC is not the only company with Android plans for next year; Sony’s very own XPERIA X10 will also be released early next year.

Currently, no other spec for the Espresso has been given; not even the OS version. Since it follows the Hero, it would be safe to assume that the device has an upgradeable OS.
