Is the HTC Nexus One an iPhone-killer?

Google Nexus OneAs early as the very first rumors of the Google phone are the many speculations that the device will be the ultimate iPhone killer; and this is not the first time people have said that about an upcoming device.

But what it is about the iPhone that makes it so “murder-full”? It is not really the hardware as most people might think. The iPhone 3Gs is technically a vintage device in this new generation of very high end smart phones with huge memory capacities and removable batteries (quite a laughable lack on the part of the iPhone). The iPhone has nothing to show when you look at physical keyboards, 720p HD video recording capabilities, large screens and even expandable memory. Still, Apple’s little modified iPod is at the top of the mobile industry.

The true measure of a mobile phone’s success is how many people want the device. Take a look at the Samsung Tocco for example, it hardly has specs of Samsung’s Galaxy or Omnia, but it was more successful than the two other devices in terms of sales.

Specs-wise, the Nexus One is leagues above the iPhone, but as seen in the recent comparison of the two devices by Techradar, the iPhone still provides a degree of usability that the Nexus One has yet to match. Take a look at the media playback capabilities; while the Nexus One does provide a much larger screen and higher resolution for video, the iPhone is better in terms of handling music.

For the Nexus One to be an iPhone-killer, it should not simply beat the iPhone in terms of sheer specifications, but it should appeal to more people. Right now, no other device has gained the success of the iPhone; the next year will determine if the Nexus has what it takes to convert the same sales.
