Nexus One to Get a Keyboard

Google Nexus OneIf the next device comes out as the Nexus Two, it would be interesting what kind of product Google has for the sixth.

It has not been more than a couple of weeks since the initial launch of the Google phone, the HTC Nexus One and there are already reports of a new version of the device in the works. While Google’s Andy Rubin has yet to confirm if the next device will indeed be called Nexus Two, it has been confirmed that will indeed be more Google branded Android phones coming soon.

The most notable report about a Nexus successor is that the next one will be an enterprise model fitted with a physical QWERTY keyboard to help with document handling, emails and messages as well as a larger battery for longer usage life. So far, everything else is purely up to speculation now, but while Google is not giving out any release dates, it is quite possible that the two phones will be identical in specs.

This will not be the first time a touch screen mobile device will be re-released with the addition of a physical keyboard. The HTC Hero will be re-released as the HTC Espresso, and the Sony Ericsson Kurara will have a keyboard bearing incarnation in the form of the SE Kanna. Both devices will share the same specifications as the original phones. The Espresso in particular is also an Android phone like the Nexus One (the SE Kurara and the SE Kanna are Symbian phones).

Coincidentally, if the Nexus One Enterprise Edition does become a reality, it will be the first time an Android Snapdragon phone will have the latest version of the Android OS and a physical keyboard. Considering that the second best keyboard option for Android users is the Motorola Milestone (with its not-so-accurate touch screen tracking), the enterprise edition is certainly worth looking forward to.
