The annual Consumer Electronics Show is currently underway in Las Vegas, kicking off yesterday with some very interesting new products being unveiled. Among the new wave of 3D TVs and mobile internet devices were some hot new phones in the pipeline, most noticeably from HTC, LG and Motorola.
HTC announced on the initial day of the CES their new HTC Smart, a phone which many people are ironically calling HTC’s first ‘dumbphone’. This is not meant as an insult but highlights the fact that this is the first phone from HTC that does not run on a smartphone OS such as Windows Mobile or Android. Instead HTC has opted for Qualcomm’s new Brew Mobile Platform which is much cheaper to implement and run. Despite this, the Smart will still run on HTC’s Sense UI and so will still have the look and feel of many of the Taiwanese company’s other handsets.
Motorola has also been raising eyebrows with its new Android handset the Backflip. The touchscreen phone has a novel way of operating its full QWERTY keyboard which really sets it apart as a phone of interest. The keyboard is on the back of the phone on the battery casing, and is operated by flipping the screen 180 degrees to the back.
LG unveiled its new entertainment rich smartphone, which is one of the new range of ‘mobile internet devices’. The GW990 features a panoramic 4.8” screen and is capable of playing 3D videos. Pushing the boundaries of mobile entertainment, the GW990 will
also be the first phone to run on Intel’s new Moorestown processor. Although announced yesterday, the entertainment device is not expected to hit the shelves until the second half of 2010.
These are some of the highlights of the first day of the CES, but there are still three more days to go. We will wait to see what else will be announced but if day one of the event is anything to go by then 2010 will be an interesting year for mobile phones.
