A recent experiment on several mobile phones has revealed a very interesting result regarding the ability of mobile gadgets to survive in extremely cold environments.
To put things into perspective, the tests subjected phones to environments that no human being should be subjected to. The test used conditions that reached to -55 degrees Fahrenheit; making it completely illogical that a phone would be subjected to such a rigorous torture in the scope of normal use.
Anyway, 6 undisclosed mobile phones were chosen for the experiment. It is stated that each device was individually tested as to what happens to the phones when they are put into really cold temperatures. The very first problems to arise were battery problems. Even at -10 degrees Fahrenheit, some batteries started shutting down. Most LCDs started having problems operating at temperatures reaching -30 degrees.
The cool part is that after all the mobile started shutting off, they were all back to being fully operational after they have fully thawed down to room temperature. This shows that it would actually be possible to take a mobile phone during extreme weather conditions. While the device will not work while frozen, bringing it back to room temperature will make it usable once again.
In the end, the phones did a lot better than expected, showing that the devices are able to withstand temporary periods of stasis or hibernation through shutting down. While it has yet to be seen how long the phones can withstand being frozen, batteries are confirmed to have very low resistance to cold.
Despite the good news that phones will outlast their owners when it comes to surviving really cold environments, it still shows that normal abuse can still wear down a phone faster than extremely cold conditions. Shocks and impacts are still the major causes of phone damage as phones are always more likely to fall off a table edge than be stuck in a freezer.
