LG’s Very own Superphone

LG GW990While most of the folks at the mobile community would be using the term Superphone to refer to the Google Nexus One, LG just revealed what seems to be a device that looks like a mobile phone, works like a mobile phone, but has the power and speed of a decent tablet.

The LG GW990 has been getting a lot of attention since it popped up at the recent CES. With LG vehemently calling the device a smart phone throughout the event, it is easy to pin down how the company plans to market this device.

Still, the big question is, will it sell?

High-end hardware is always good, it is easy to see lot of people giving attention to any device that has the word Snapdragon in the specifications; but there is a point when there is simply too much – at least in size.

The phone is promising a huge 4.8 inch capacitive touch screen with a resolution of 1024 x 480 pixels. That’s pretty big, with the XPERIA X10 at a solid 4 inches; the GW990 is going to be a lot larger than the average smart phone.

It may be big, but it certainly will not be small. The LG GW990 will be powered by a second generation Intel Atom processor. The clock speed has yet to be announced, but as for reference, the Asus Eee PC 1005HA net book has an N280 Intel Atom processor running at 1.66 GHz, that is even faster than the dual core Snapdragon running at 1.5 GHz.

Anyway, just looking at these initial specs, this phone is looking more and more like a tablet than a phone, even if its uses the Linux-based Moblin OS. The shape and size is very tablet like too. No word yet if the battery is removable, but it is amazing how an 1850 mAh battery can power an Atom processor for hours.
