It is not surprising that Google has decided to come out with its own mini social networking tool. Instead of creating a completely new system like Picasa, Flickr or Google Videos, they have decided to incorporate the system into Google Mail.
While this may seem like a good choice it certainly is not something everyone appreciates. For one thing, this would complicate matters of privacy for people who use different mail accounts for social networking and personal business transactions. While everyone has the option to opt out of Google Buzz, it is inevitable that many would treat it like an unchecked inbox folder.
Many industry leaders and experts are not too fond of welcoming Google’s Buzz too. Microsoft has made its stand by stating that the industry does not need another social networking tool. Instead, what people need is better integration of existing networks –much like what they are doing with Hotmail. Yahoo! has also said that they have had their own Buzz service available for over a year and it practically offers the same service and features.
Individuals currently do not know what to make of it. Google is hoping that people would use the system as if it as Facebook updates or Twitter and they even have a mobile version of the Buzz available to users of Android 2.0 and above. They have also said that the Buzz will work well not only for social networking but for internal systems such as schools and businesses. Buzz is also reportedly going to be integrated into Google’s other services such as YouTube, Picasa and more.
Currently, Google is losing ground to online usage on mobile phones because of Facebook and Twitter, their move to gain ground on social networks may be a way for the company to get back that usage time.
