Windows Mobile 7 Highlights

Windows Mobile 7There are plenty of things to ponder about the upcoming Windows Mobile 7. For one thing, it is an impressive mobile platform, but the real question is whether it will have ample applications support (though we do know that it will have Marketplace access –but not compatibility with existing apps for WinMo 6.X; which means that it just lost a large library of already existing apps), we also do not know if this February teaser would make interest in the system die out.

After all, it’s a good ten months before the holidays arrive and according to Microsoft, we will not be seeing this OS on a phone till the holiday season arrives. That is actually point number 10 in Know Your Mobile’s top ten list of great things about the new WinMo 7.

Anyway, they also point out several really impressive things about the WinMo operating system.

First up is the new user interface. Actually, it is something that we mostly take for granted. Considering how impressive the iPhone OS and the Google Android interfaces are, nobody really wants to use the old WinMo 6.5 UI. Even the HTC HD2 Snapdragon smart phone uses the HTC Sense user interface as a skin over WinMo’s UI in order to make the features accessible with a capacitive touch screen interface (on a side note, it looks like the Sense UI is getting an upgrade). In any case, it has been long due for Microsoft to create a mobile platform that is compatible with capacitive touch screens.

Another cool point in the list is the inclusion of the Xbox Live Games service for Windows Mobile users. While there is a certain charm to having one’s gamer profile linked to a mobile phone, it is not that appealing to non Xbox users. The real wildcard here is whether the service will get good games, or just the usual casual title under the XBL brand.
