The Windows Mobile operating system has not been doing well. WinMo versions 6.5 and below have been criticized for their use and focus on stylus based user interfaces which made the platform incompatible with capacitive touch screen phones. This meant that WinMo did not benefit from features such as multi touch and gestures.
Despite this, many people still looked forward to the release of Window Mobile 7. News of the new OS version promised that it would deliver many of the missing features that people wanted and more.
Last Sunday, Microsoft finally delivered.
“The phone is not a PC” this phrase was repeated several times throughout the presentation of the WinMo 7 OS as Steve Ballmer, Joe Belfiore and several others gave pretty impressive presentations on the features and highlights of the new operating system. While this phrase was meant to give users a different perspective on how the OS functions, it would not be too hard to imagine that Microsoft’s devs have been using it as a mantra when they made the new OS.
Simply put, the new OS is downright impressive. In fact, this is how Windows Mobile should have been made from the start. With the current features, style and form of the new OS, it certainly shows the Microsoft is all geared up to face other platforms such as the Google Android and the Apple iPhone OS.
The new fully customizable layout explains why it was previously announced that WinMo 7 would not be skinnable. The OS groups functions such as games, media, office, people, marketplace and pictures into different pages that you can switch to at any time. All in all, the OS has given plenty for us to look forward too.
