According to recent surveys (and also common sense with tech trends) more and more people are using mobile phones to access the internet. And while browsing for updates on news is not on top of the list, people are going online for a whole different reason; to check for updates on friends.
Social networking is the new internet. Well, that is literally wrong but in some ways, social networking really is rewriting the very concept of going online. Many people do not go online for news, email or other reasons; many folks simply for online to engage in social networking activities –or browse for NSFW material.
Facebook and Twitter are the big winners in the recent studies of smart phone users. 3G access to the two major sites have grown almost exponentially over the past couple of years and the number keeps on growing.
Anyway, before we continue, here’s our favorite part of surveys: the boring numbers! comScore Inc has found that 30.8% of smart phone users access their smart phones for accessing social networking site in January 2010 alone. This is a major growth from the previous 22.5% of users from January 2009. The number of Facebook users over the past year has grown up to 112% and the number of Twitter users has grown to a massive 347%.
Considering the large role that Facebook and Twitter currently play in our society, it comes as to no surprise that smart phones that come with built in integration of the social networking tools have become more widespread. Services such as the Motoblur and the Vodafone 360 are also expanding to include Facebook and Twitter accounts. Expect to see even more and more of social networking in the next few years.
