Drivers Continue Using Mobile Phones While Driving

Driving PhoneWith plenty of great new devices coming out, it is hard to keep our focus on the other news bits coming out lately. Still, one nagging report keeps recurring every few weeks and we are flabbergasted as to why people are still not wizening up.

Apparently, despite stricter sanctions and a greater awareness about laws prohibiting the use of mobile phones while driving, many people still continue to use mobile phones to text, call and even check social networking websites while driving.

Seriously, nobody needs to send a Tweet when passing over a highway.

Apparently, most people do not care if they end up killing themselves, their passengers and even innocent passersby just so they can send a new Facebook update on their smart phones. Despite the fact that mobile phones increase the ability to communicate, it seems that staying connected may be far more dangerous than we thought.

Studies have shown that reaction speeds, focus and overall driving performance are severely hampered when using mobile phones while driving. The fact that using a mobile device requires a person to take their eyes off the road has proven to be a significantly dangerous act that endangers people just as easily as driving under the influence of alcohol.

Stricter sanctions have already been put into place. Police now even check mobile phone records to determine the cause of accidents. Even insurance companies are known to consider the use of mobile phones while driving as a reason to turn down applications.

The worst of it all is that people use mobile phones while driving for the most mundane reasons. Facebook and Twitter are two of the most often accessed social networking tools –are we really waiting for the very first Twitter induced road kill before people start to listen?
