For those who are not familiar with the technology, RSS is a channel through which the top headlines, updates and news from a specific website or service can be read. In practice, if you had an RSS feed of BCC Sports, you would be able to see a list today’s top stories with a bit of a preview on the article.
It is very useful tool if you are the kind of person who loves to jump around various internet news sites. Instead of wasting time having to clink through so many links and load page upon page of ad-infested content, RSS feeds will let you see all the big headlines at a single glance.
Using RSS is a completely simple task. One can simply download an RSS feed software for the computer or an RSS application for the mobile phone. These programs will instantly take in all the news headlines from your favorite feeds and organize them in an easy to use format. You can also sign up for an online RSS feed service if you do not feel like having to download RSS content.
Anyway, one of the most often used RSS feed aggregators is the Google Reader. This free online service from Google gives you a quick rundown of all the latest news bits in an easy to view format; it looks like email for news.
Of course, accessing Google Reader on the iPhone is a bit of a hassle so there’s a nice new app that will let you view your RSS content: Byline. This new app connects to your Google reader account to bring you the latest news and updates. However, since Byline is strictly a dedicated reader application, it will not be able to sign you up for new feeds nor will user be able to change the Reader account settings from the app.
