The real tagline here is that a low cost Windows Phone mobile platform is currently in the works. The news was given out by a developer of Microsoft India, stating that the new platform is intended to be used on mobile devices that are of a lower specification than the one declared by Microsoft for the Windows Phone 7 OS.
Anyway, as you may already know, the hardware requirements for the Windows Phone 7 mobile platform are pretty steep, with the HTC HD2 just barely passing the standards it comes as a natural thought that all WP7 devices will be very expensive. While the move would allow WP7 to compete evenly against the Apple iPhone OS and its uniform hardware, it also alienates low to mid range clients who are not willing to shell out so much for a smart phone.
The Microsoft Kin smart phones already partially address this concern. The two Kin devices (Turtle and Pure) are not only meant to be low cost alternatives, but also to provide people who want a great user experience but do not need the complete functionality of a smart phones (basically, folks who just need a phone for Facebook, Twitter and browsing).
Back to the new OS, this platform is expected to bring the bare form of the Windows Phone OS but without the dynamic animations and features that would require extensive hardware specifications. Imagine Microsoft’s Kin phones but with the ability to run apps and a few other functions. The smart phones would than not need to fulfill the WP7 hardware requirements and thus be significantly cheaper to produce.
With no official announcement from Microsoft, expect this new OS to arrive by late this year or early next year.
