The Future of Touch Screen Technology

TouchscreenWith new HDTV displays and the rage of 3D visuals growing, the need for better user input devices has also grown. And while camera technology is being enhanced to enable devices to start using our gestures, motions and even expressions to convey commands to an electronic gadget, nothing beats being able to punch in commands with your bare hands.

And this is the direction that touch screen technology has perfected –bare handed controls. Starting with the older resistive touch screens, using our hands was still a bad idea, with older device not being able to recognize inputs clearly short of scraping the screen with the edge of a fingernail (some people even leave one nail oddly shaped to serve as a stylus).

With the arrival of capacitive touch screen technology, the world of portable devices, most importantly, smart phones, changed completely. Navigating, panning, scrolling became quick easy commands that can be accomplished with the stroke of the finger or a slide across the screen. Multi touch gestures such as pinches began to be recognized and everything became much more intuitive.

This is why it comes as to no surprise that people prefer smart phones with touch screen displays. The screens are bigger, the phones become easier to use and most importantly, the overall user experience becomes fun.

Of course, the progress does not end here. There is plenty of research and development being done in order to improve touch screen technology.

There has been significant progress in creating touch sensitive panels that are thin, flexible and transparent allowing for various surfaces to be converted into input panels. For touch screen technology, this means that the screens can have better quality resolutions and images when combined with the newer thinner screens.
