WP7 Gets a Name Change

Windows Phone 7The tech journalist community is pretty much beaming happily about the announcement regarding the change in the name of Windows Phone 7 Series. Now we get to strike out that little word at the end.

After all, “series” simply does not fit.

When people hear the word series, they will imagine a line of products or services that come from a single root brand. Take the Star Wars series, depending on who you ask, it’s the series of three movies shown starting with Episode IV, or the entire line from the original trilogy to the prequel trilogy. In any case, you know that there is more than just one item. The same goes for television shows. Nobody will tell you that it is a series when it’s a one-shot made-for-TV movie. The only time that it turns into a series is if there is more than one episode (or a mini-series in the case for some shows).

Anyway, back to Windows Phone 7, there is no series here; simply one new operating system. Sure, people will tell you that before WP7, there was a whole load of Windows Mobile operating systems. The new OS however, is not a continuation of the older WinMo platform and thus, not of the same series or continuity.

In fact, Microsoft themselves has declared early on that the two systems are not in the same line. They even confirmed that once WP7 comes out, WinMo will be renamed to Windows Phone Classic.

On a lighter note, it appears that with this last update for the name change, Microsoft is about to take that last silent plunge before it unveils WP7 officially. The past month was chock full of WP7 updates that we were wondering when they would actually have the time to incorporate all the new features to the OS.
