Facebook Privacy Fallout Update

facebookiconThe big word is that Facebook is finally taking notice of the many complains of users regarding the privacy issues and the best they can come up with is a new layout for the privacy settings page. It does not solve all the issues, but at least it does answer one problem –which is lack of better user control.

The bottom line here is that there is still privacy crisis. But since people now have a better way of changing the settings, the problem is not that bad. It seems like most of Facebook’s users do not mind that the default settings for accounts are hardly anything private as long as they can switch everything to their preferred settings. –in any case, it seems to be an open and shut case, provided that the new privacy settings will stick even if new features are introduced in the site.

Until now, there are people voicing out their dislike of the social networking site and are threatening to quit. In many ways, they really should. After all, Mark Zuckerberg is not forcing anyone to stay. While Facebook does benefit from having so many users, one can only please so many. There is also another benefit to people leaving Facebook –this will give other social networks a chance to grow and expand –as Facebook has managed to corner the industry for quite some time now.

Of course, amidst all the news, there are also plenty of exaggerations. One such statement arises in the form of “500 million Facebook users consider quitting” –which is actually very misleading. According to the most recent count, Facebook only has 450 million users (though it should reach 500 million easily at the rate it is growing), and only 3 out of 5 users have considered quitting, and in that 60%, only a very handful few are actually determined enough to delete accounts.
