MeeGo to Arrive by October 2010

nokia-n900-meegoIt looks like two major operating systems will be launching this coming October.

In a recent new update from Nokia and Intel, they have confirmed that the new open source mobile platform, MeeGo, will be released on October 2010. So far, it has not been confirmed as to whether that month will see the launch of just the OS or if there will be new mobile phones that make use of the MeeGo platform.

The MeeGo is the product of the teamwork between the Moblin developers from Intel and Nokia’s Maemo developers. The two had been working on separate operating systems for quite some time (and Nokia had actually been able to release a Maemo smart phone last year) before they came together for this new OS.

Intel has announced that they have designed the MeeGo to work with the Intel ATOM CPU and also with ARM technology. Because of this, the MeeGo OS will be highly adaptive to various types of mobile phone hardware.

Nokia originally intended for the Maemo operating system to be the main OS for the Nokia N-series handsets (Nokia’s high end smart phone series). Last year, the Finnish phone maker announced that the Symbian OS will be used by other phone series; Maemo debuted with the N900 before further development shifted to MeeGo.

Recently, Nokia has confirmed that the upcoming Nokia N8 Symbian^3 smart phone will be the last handset using the older OS in the N-series. From here on, al Symbian handsets will be released under new phone series such as the E series and the C series mobile phones. Rumors indicate that the Nokia N9, which has been leaked in various images, will be moved from the N-series to the C-series.

Developers will also get to try out the MeeGo operating system pretty early. Intel and Nokia have released the developer version of the platform in order to entice developers to support the new OS.
