Mobile network operator Orange UK has confirmed that they too will be offering the BlackBerry Torch when the device comes out this month of August (supposedly). Other network operators have also confirmed that they will be offering the latest BlackBerry handset once it becomes available making the Torch as one of the most anticipated BB handsets to ever be released.
According to reports’ Research in Motion’s share of the smart phone market has been slowly decreasing. With the Apple iOS keeping a tight hold of its share and the Google Android’s numbers growing more each day, BlackBerry users are getting less and less –add in the fact that plenty of well designed keyboard toting handsets are now being made available and people have less of a reason to choose a BlackBerry smart phone.
This is why the release of the Torch 9800 is important for RIM. Not only does it add new phone to the lineup, but it also shows a different side of the BlackBerry.
The new smart phone will be focusing heavily on touch controls, social networking and most importantly, media playback. For most smart phone users, the BlackBerry is a messaging and email handset, and while it can play back media such as music and videos, people preferred the larger screens on other mobile phones.
With a 3.2 inch TFT touch screen display and a resolution of 360 x 480 pixels, the new Torch 9800 is hoping to change that trend. Thanks to the new BB OS 6, the handset will be able to make full use of all of the older BlackBerry functions as well as a few extras.
Speaking of market trends, BlackBerry owners are most likely to consider switching to an Android or an iPhone. Where there is a solid chunk of the market that is going to stay loyal to the brand, RIM still needs to expand their user base.
