Mobile Phone Technology: How Far have We Gone?

Understanding today’s society would not be complete without knowing one important technology: wireless communication.

Mobile phones, 3G connectivity and the internet have all been mashed up together in a system that is both unbelievably convenient and crippling; a paradoxical system that is so strange when you get to the basics, but is ultimately important and crucial to our daily lives.

Take business for example, the corporate world has become faster, tougher and even more competitive because everyone has seen that being able to communicate on the move, send and reply to email instantly as well as being able to access businesses’ private networks remotely on a phone are very powerful solutions to many logistical problems.

Another example is social networking. Thanks to technology and systems developed by the folks who made Multiply, MySpace and now, Facebook, there are plenty of reasons to go online.

Facebook alone is the reason why mobile access to the internet has gone up to an incredibly high degree, and factoring in the addition of services such as microblogging site Twitter and instant messaging apps and you have a gadget that not only gets people together through voice calls and SMS, but also in other media as well.

Of course, none of all this would be possible unless the wireless technology itself has been upgraded to a vast degree. The introduction of the WiFi and 3G to mobile devices is a major turning point for smart phones –allowing access to the vast world of the internet from anywhere with a 3G signal or WiFi hotspot.

The hardware has also made things a lot different, touch screen technology has made the web more intuitive and better processors and batteries have been introduced –which in turn, allowed developers to do more with their devices such as more intricate and resource intensive apps.
