New technology always has a way of surpassing the media it uses, and with social networking, Facebook seems to be getting closer to used-by date.
Mobile phone technology has no doubt become the second face of the famous social networking site. With many phones now supporting pre-loaded integrated social networking tools, it is easy to see how influential the social network has become for our society. What is even more astonishing is that they managed to surpass Google in terms of access time and usage –it seems that the main reason why people go online using their mobile phone is for checking their latest Facebook notifications.
This was no surprise, at the very height of the growth for smart phones, 3G technology and Facebook; the three elements heavily supported one another. It made perfect sense that as each grew, so did the others. However, recent studies are showing that those in the UK are now using the social networking service less and less each month. In fact, the average usage rate has dropped down by 30 minutes as of late.
This is the first sign that people are losing interest in the social networking site –though usage of smart phones has not dropped at all, in fact, one could even say that it is rising.
As surprising as this may sound, this is actually quite expected. While Facebook is obviously nowhere near being shut down, the general interest in the service will rise and fall progressively. Smart phones on the other hand will continue to go up as it adapts to newer media, newer features and of course, newer social networking tools.
Currently, social networking site Facebook still holds the longest usage time –even with the half hour decrease. But as the years go by, that number will slowly drop down.
