Tough phones seem like very gimmicky items. After all, nobody really invests over a hundred Pounds into a single device and not even give the slightest care to the often delicate electronic parts that are within. The same is especially true for today’s high end smart phones which cost far more than regular handsets. The closest that a touch screen device comes to a tough phone is the Motorola Defy –and this phone can only withstand small amounts of water, dust and the occasional slight bump.
Mobile phone maker, Sonim, is taking the concept of tough phones to a whole new level. Sure, the hardware is pretty much stripped down to almost nothing but the bare essentials. But in return, the user gets to have a mobile phone that is not only practical in purpose, but is more than able to handle harsh environments. This is the perfect phone to bring on camping, hiking or hunting trips where being able to take care of an electronic device is a concern that is often ignored.
Another great reason to have the Sentinel is for users who have very active lifestyles that are not suited for carrying delicate equipment. It has easy to use buttons (than can be pressed easily even when wearing safety gloves) and the speakers are quite powerful too, allowing users to be heard despite being in locations and environments where there are plenty of loud noises. The device’s battery is also extra tough, allowing for the user to use the handset’s GPS and other features nonstop for at least 24 hours.
The Sonim Sentinel is basically a standard 2G handset that has been outfitted with shock, water and dust resistant casing. It is designed to withstand being submerged in water for more than half an hour, be subjected 2 meter drops (onto hard surfaces) as well as really high temperatures.
