There is a pretty interesting handset from Sonim, the XP1300. The new device, as one would expect from the mobile phone manufacturer, is a phone that has been designed to withstand ‘extreme’ situations that could potentially damage or even completely render other phones useless.
Be it being submerged in 2 metres of water or being dropped from a height of 2 metres, this phone has been designed to take punishment and still deliver a killer ringtone. But that is all just fluff advertising for folks who have nothing to do with extreme sports and simply spend their eight hours of their work days slaving behind an office desk right?
Quite wrong –as a matter of fact, it is in the mundane and everyday events that mobile devices are more likely to get damaged and destroyed. And while the max torture tolerance of a two meter drop may already seem extreme, the accumulated amount of shock that a standard handset receives on a daily basis is actually far more excruciating.
Still, the argument pushes the fact that average phones tend to survive average lifestyles –and the occasional phone smashing accidents are not that common either. So why would people sacrifice the comfort and leisure of a fully functional smart phone for a basic device?
The answer is simple: alternatives. While the shift from a basic 2G handset to a Sonim device would be an easy decision, getting one when you have already got the latest high end device takes a little more rationale. These tough phones are never made to replace the high end models, but they are designed to work and function when other phones will not. Keeping one in your emergency kit or storage room is a great idea as the phone’s battery will last over a month on a full charge.
