With Apple’s marketing, it could be believed by many consumers that the iPad was the first tablet. Far from it however as there were Android tablets way before the iPad (namely from ARCHOS) and before that, tablets have been living in the industrial and corporate world for well over a decade. What Apple does get credit for is bringing the first tablet to the market that had a major consumer appeal.
In the wake of Android Honeycomb 3.0 and Apple’s iOS 4.3 and the iPad, Microsoft, the only other major player in the mobile operating system department (now that Symbian is breathing it’s last breaths) has been taking it’s time with bringing a tablet to the market that can rival the iPad. Yes there have been Microsoft Windows 7 tablets before, but none of them quite lived up to expectation performance wise (hello HP Slate).
That changes with the Eee Slate from ASUS. This is a fully fledged tablet with the power of a notebook (not netbook). After seeing the specs such as 4GB of DDR# RAM, Intel Core i5 processor and a host of connectivity options, it is clear to see that this tablet is anything but ordinary in terms of power.
With their latest commercials, Microsoft and ASUS are taking real customer stories to show how the tablet is useful. One of the biggest things both companies are playing on here is the device is not limited to an app store or the web. Almost any program that can run on a regular desktop can run on the ASUS Eee Slate with no performance decline. Those are big statements, but after seeing demos of Photoshop and other graphically intense programs on the tablet, we are inclined to believe Microsoft and ASUS. Check out all four commercials below and tell us what you think.

Nokia has decided to make the most out of the delayed launch for the N9 N-series MeeGo smart phone. The device was supposed to launch this December, but due to a wide variety of reasons, the N9 never made it to the production lines in time.
Now it appears that development has been cancelled in order to upgrade the current specs of the device, and the new focus of the updates hardware is for gaming. A new processor clocked at 1.2 GHz and a graphics card that can process 160 polygons per second has been added in the device –further improving the current hardware that includes an 8 mega pixel camera, a 4.2 inch touch screen and more.
Asus’ E600 Windows Phone 7 handset has finally been put up in the FCC list which means that the device is about to hit the production lines and will be shipped straight to sellers soon. While there is still no confirmation on the device’s actual price and launch date, many expect to see this Asus device ready by the end of the year.
The Android OS is getting a new supporter in the form of the Carphone Warehouse. Graham Stapleton, Carphone Warehouse’s chief commercial officer firmly believes that the Android OS will be leading the technological forefront. Currently, the gadget retailer has an exclusive deal with Google in order to distribute the Nexus S Android smart phone when it finally comes out.
The Nexus S has been developed by Google and Samsung and it brings together plenty of the best technologies both sides can offer. In terms of hardware, the new phone will pack NFC, a super AMOLED touch screen, an 8 mega pixel camera, a 1.2 GHz CPU and more. The OS itself will be the latest Android 2.3 Gingerbread version. Expect to see the Nexus S smart phone in Carphone Warehouse’s stock before the end of the year comes.

It seems that some folks have mistaken the new ASUS Eee Pad as a spoof of Apple’s iPad. The fact of the matter is that Asus’ Eee series of devices has been around for quite some time. The series has recently met a lot of success as the Eee PC net books found plenty of great reviews from people who tried out the new mini laptop that supposedly has a very long battery life.
To the delight of Asus’ customers, the batteries performed up to par, and the little 10 inch laptops easily made its mark in the industry. The Eee Pad is nothing like the iPad. In fact, aside from the fact that both gadgets can be called tablets, they really have nothing else in common. Apple’s touch screen tablet runs the iPhone operating system, and as such, serves more of a multimedia purpose than an actual computing device. The Eee Pad on the other hand, is running the Windows 7 Home Premium desktop software.
Asus’ Eee Pad is slightly larger than expected at the size of 12 inches, but the tradeoff is pretty obvious; for the slightly larger screen, the resolution looks better and it really feels like a mini monitor. In fact, Asus has a whole line of accessories that practically transforms the Eee Pad EP121 into an instant desktop computer complete with keyboard and slots. The only missing accessory from the pack is a mouse which really is not needed as the tablet itself is already a touch screen device.
Of course, since the EP121 is a tablet PC, it is a niche device. Those with existing netbooks and desktop computers have little need of this device; though some folks who live in tight space might appreciate that the EP121 is a desktop kit that you can fold up and store in a small shelf.
