Samsung sued by Apple

Thursday, April 21st, 2011

It should not be too surprising that Apple would begin the legal battle concerning Android. While Microsoft who has also claimed that Android infringes on its patents for the most part has kept most of its legal battles outside of court, Apple has chosen to take its fights to the courts and it is doing so once again with Samsung.

According to Apple: “Rather than innovate and develop its own technology and a unique Samsung style for its smart phone products and computer tablets, Samsung chose to copy Apple’s technology, user interface and innovative style in these infringing products.”

The ironic thing is Samsung manufactures most of the flash memory, screens and other components used in the iPad, iPhone and other Apple products. But I’m sure Apple is not sitting well with Samsung’s sale records of last year (80 million Galaxy S smartphones). Either way, the lawsuit could be interpreted as Apple seeing Samsung as more than a partner and rather a rival.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread for Galaxy S leaks

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

Many Samsung Galaxy S owners still have not received the update for 2.2 Froyo yet, so you can imagine that some would be a little annoyed at the fact that 2.3 Gingerbread is floating around sporting Samsung’s TouchWiz 4.0.

But before you go jumping to the download link to get your Gingerbread on, let us warn you that this is an early build of the ROM and as such we are sure there are a few bugs that might not be sweet to deal with.

The ROM was leaked on the SamFirmware forum and according to initial reports; the ROM might require a rooted phone in order for the Android Marketplace to work with this version of the software. More importantly, we’re hearing that this version sports TouchWiz 4.0 which is currently rocking its wares on the next generation of Galaxy S devices.

In order to use the update, users are recommended to use the ODIN tool and thanks to the new EXT4 file system, it should be a lot faster than the RFS file system. Just be aware that if you should make a mistake or something should go wrong during the update, you could end up with an expensive brick. But for those who love to hack, we’re sure this will not deter you.

On a side note, the TouchWiz 4.0 interface does not stray far from the current version (3.0) and still carries quite a few of the highly controversial colorful icons. Other than that, most of the new features will be that of the actual Android update and not Samsung’s skin overlay.

It is our guess as to when an official release of this software could occur, but there is not trouble in hoping is there? We’ll let you know if anything else transpires about said update.

Samsung prepping 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab?

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Samsung has made it clear in no uncertain terms that it intends to dominate the tablet world in much the same way it has been dominating the world of mobile phones, namely the high end smartphone market thanks to its Android driven Galaxy S line.
With Galaxy Tab sales totaling 2 million as of last December, it is clear to see that there is a huge market for slate PCs and with Apple currently being its only major competitor, Samsung is bent on making sure that it gets certain that it stays ahead of the curve.

Already the company has gone ahead and updated the Galaxy Tab to play more nicely with such competitors as the soon to be released Motorola Xoom tablet. That said, the company has hinted that it plans to release devices in many different form factors much like what Motorola has planned as well, so it should come as no surprise that the latest rumors claim that Samsung will be bringing an 8.9 inch tablet with Android 3.0 to the market next month.

So fat we have no other information on said device but it could sport 4G as well on networks as Verizon and Sprint in the U.S and possible HSPA and HSDPA in Europe as well as the United States. If this is the case it would fit perfectly between Samsung’s new Galaxy Tab 10.1 inch tablet and their smartphones, perfect for those who want more screen real estate than what is found in the average smartphone but not interested in something as big as an iPad or Xoom tablet.

If this is the case, the launch could coincide with Apple’s iPad 2 which will be announced March 2nd at a special event in San Francisco.

Samsung Wave 2 Available in the UK now

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

With all this talk about the Galaxy S line, it would appear that Samsung isn’t interested in pushing any other high end Android phone outside of the moniker. However, Sammy and the rest of the gang over there in South Korea have launched the Wave 2, the update to last year’s Android device which received solid reviews and nice sales numbers.

The device features Samsung’s Bada operating system and comes with a five megapixel camera around the back as well as a 3.7 inch Super Clear (not AMOLED) LCD along with a front facing camera which we’re guessing is geared towards video chatting. There will be a few entertainment packages included, that is until the 31st of March: “Designed for gamers and app-lovers, the bundle includes five of the most recognisable and highest ranking apps in the paid for charts from Gameloft and EA Games, which are available from Samsung Apps,” says Samsung. The game bundle includes Monopoly, Need for Speed Shift, FIFA 10, Tetris, Assasin’s Creed: Altair’s Chronicles.

Samsung is touting their gaming hub as a great way for customers to waste time and thanks to the Social Hub, there will be multiple ways for owners to share media such as photos and videos across their entire social network world. Director of Mobile Samsung UK, Simon Stanford also said: “And they’ll also benefit from the growing popularity of our App store via the new gaming bundle we are offering.”

The Samsung Wave II is now available in the UK via 02 Wireless and Phones4u. Those who are looking for a basic to midrange phone can apply accordingly, while those who need more oomph might want to wait for the second generation Galaxy S models.

Samsung MWC slide confirms Galaxy S and Tab successors

Monday, January 31st, 2011

Samsung is on the quest to become the world’s largest cellphone manufacturer and while it has a ways to go before it catches up with its Finnish competitor, they have made short work of the likes of Apple, ZTE and Blackberry. That said, it would be surprising if the company did not have big announcements at MWC this year. Thankfully they have hinted at these announcements and now a slide leaked from the company’s MWC keynote address confirms that indeed there will be successors to the Galaxy S and Galaxy S Tab devices, currently believed to go by the Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Tab 2, respectively.

According to the slides that leaked, the next generation of Galaxy S smartphones will feature an 8 megapixel camera, one that is capable of doing full 1080p video recording. All that content will be viewable via a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED Plus screen which we suspect will be one of the phones major strengths seeing that Samsung has one of the best mobile displays on the market.

According to the slide, there will be an included NFC reader which seems to be the latest trend in cellular technology these days. RAM is listed at 1GB though here is no mention of the processor though we wouldn’t be expecting anything less than dual core action at 1GHz if not greater. Last but not least, the phone will be 0.9mm thinner than the current generation Galaxy S line and if Sprint has its way, we could be seeing a version with a sliding keyboard along and a little more fat.

That said, the company is gearing up for a summer and holiday launch of the new devices and if that is the case, we could well be seeing a dual between the likes of Motorola, Samsung and Apple come this holiday season.

Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 Unveiled

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Samsung might be planning big announcements at MWC, however, that does not mean that the company is going to wait until the event on February 14th in order to continue the expansion of its Galaxy line.

As of today, the Android equipped Galaxy Ace S5830 has become official thanks to Samsung’s Indonesian website. And according to the specifications, all the rumored software and hardware specifications have been confirmed.

The phone will be running an 800 MHz Hummingbird CPU that will power the phones Android 2.2 Froyo operating system. The display is a 3.5 inch capacitive HVGA resolution slab of glass. There is a 5 megapixel camera included on the phones back which will be able to shoot 720p video.

Other features include Bluetooth 2.1 and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and dual band on the 900/2100 MHz spectrum with 3G data support and 7.2Mbps HSDPA support. The phone is quad-band and will support GSM/GPRS/EDGE. microUSB and a 3.5mm jack for listening to tunes is included.

So far it has been yet to be seen when the device will be released, but Samsung has had a track record of pumping out devices at a fast rate so we wouldn’t be surprised if this one were to hit no later than summer of this year and judging by the phones GSM and HSDPA bands, we suspect this one will be marketed within the Asia, African and European region though the phone could eventually cross the seas and land in either South America or up north in Canada on Bell Mobility as well as the U.S thanks to AT&T and maybe T-Mobile.

The phone will fall in Samsung’s midrange Galaxy line which should provide plenty of competition to the likes of Motorola, LG and ASUS within the same line.

Samsung Ch@t 350 Details Leak

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

While Samsung has been busy challenging the likes of Apple, Motorola and other monsters in the mobile arena, the company is fortifying its feature phone base. Such fortification can be seen in the newly leaked low-end Samsung Ch@t 350 which will run Samsung’s propriety operating system that features some version of the company’s TouchWiz UI which has been incorporated in its higher end phones such as the Galaxy S line.

Details are few at the moment but from what we know, the phone will be quadband GSM and support a 2.4-inch display that supports 262k colors and a resolution of 240×320. The phone will be aimed at heavy texters and as such will feature a horizontal sliding QWERTY keyboard.

The phone will feature a couple not so baseline features such as Bluetooth 2.1, FM radio tuner, microUSB 2.0 port, microSD slot that supports cards up to 8GB, and a 2MP camera on the back of the device. Talk time is rated at 12 hours.

Currently there is no word on a price or the availability of said device. However, seeing that the phone will not be under one of Samsung’s major announcements, it could well be announced next month.

Samsung, one of the world’s biggest cellphone manufactures as well as the biggest supplier of mobile displays has been busy bringing its high end mobile department to the public with the release of it’s Samsung Galaxy S line which has beat company’s expectations with over 10 million devices sold since it’s release back in the holiday season of last year.

Samsung is set to announce the successor of its Galaxy S line at MWC next month as well as the roadmap to its Galaxy tablet which has also received great success sales wise as cellphone carriers worldwide have picked up the device.

Tablets: the Running Score

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

The mobile phone industry has been invaded by new type of device: touch screen tablets. Oddly enough, these devices do look a lot like oversized smart phones –but what is more important is how they function and many would have to admit, the significantly larger screen certainly helps. Here’s a quick round up of all the ones available and ones that we know are worth looking forward to.

First is the Apple iPad. No mention of tablets is complete with this one. Not only was Apple the first on the scene (for several months, they had monopoly of the industry), but they also set a pretty good bar. The touch controls are smooth and accurate, the battery life is impressively long (10 hours straight usage), and the weight is pretty light for its size. Expect your limbs to get a little sore holding this up for hours though; the 9.7 inch touch screen does get a little weighty.

We are certainly looking forward to seeing the iPad 2 when it finally comes out. Rumors are saying that it will be sporting a smaller screen (perhaps to compete with the new Android tablets). In any case, the device is confirmed to be packed with a digital camera. The only thing missing here is Flash support.

Flash however, is present in both the BlackBerry Playbook with its QNX operating system and of course, the Android operating system. While it is not confirmed if the QNX Flash support still needs a patch, we do know that the Android 2.2 Froyo is made Flash-ready.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Motorola Stingray are current the front line tablets for the Android, with the still unveiled Stingray promising to give the iPad 2 a serious competition. While the Android lacks the massive game library of iTunes, the device shines in all other functions –especially with eBook reading as the smaller 7 inch touch screen is proving to be optimum ergonomic size for tablets.

News Bits: Mobile Phone News Updates

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

The Samsung made, Google branded Nexus S is not due to arrive in the UK until later this December (many are already marking the 20th on their calendars). In any case, the phone is going to definitely arrive and it is making plenty of news each day. Just a while back, several Nexus S smart phones have been strapped into special protective containers and launched up to 30,000 feet into the atmosphere –which is actually pretty high.

The devices were then released where their fall had been broken by a specially made parachute. The move was done as part of an experiment to prove that the handset could survive a vacuum –which it did.

Speaking of the Nexus S and the Android OS, the Gingerbread version has specialized voice recognition that has been designed specifically for the system to be able to learn the audio pattern of a specific user. This is very important as it allows the Android to be able to recognize specific words and intonations –thereby making other voice command features more efficient.

Nokia and HTC have both confirmed that their game plan for the coming 2011 is to include a good array of touch screen tablets on their lineup. While this is a good plan for HTC which has both the Android and the Windows Phone 7 platforms to use. Nokia still has yet to prove that either the Symbian or the MeeGo platforms are good enough for a large touch screen device like a tablet.

With LTE technology right now being focused on 4G communications, there is no surprise that many companies are looking into developing phones fully equipped with the hardware that is projected to be future necessities. While the average life of a phone is about 2 years, there are many who opt to trade in for new unit a lot earlier –which makes the point of buying phones for the LTE features somewhat moot.

Today’s Top Mobile News Stories

Apple’s iPad 2 is back in the spotlight again and this time, thanks to a new confirmation from Apple that the device will be able to support video chat thanks to the dual camera feature. While we already knew early on that a camera would be part of the device’s specs, nobody could confirm that a second front-facing camera would also be available.

Also from Apple is a new patent for software technology that would allow app sharing among smart phone users. This new feature has yet to see any practical use in the industry, though it is likely that Apple has already got a business model to make full use of this feature. Hopefully, Apple also starts convincing developers to create more game and application demos in order to encourage people to buy more from the iTunes store.

LG and Samsung may have a little bit on the fence about updating their top Android devices to version 2.3 Gingerbread. While the exact reasons have been lost in all the confusion and conflicting information (LG’s Facebook page stated that the 600MHz CPU was not enough, though it was never stated by Google that the Android would need a 1GHz processor in the first place –and it does not).

In any case, the 2.3 update has been confirmed for both developers and specially their phones: the Optimus One and the Galaxy S. Both devices are now confirmed to be compatible and waiting for the next Android update. Speaking of the i9000 Galaxy S from Samsung, the update to version 2.3 will also be appearing early for users under T-Mobile UK and 3 UK. LG’s Optimus One still has no confirmed network operators that will be offering the update when it launches.

Microsoft has announced that it will be paying developers of the Windows Phone 7 mobile platform as early as January –as opposed to February. The good news just came in just a while ago and is part of the new developer payout system that MS will be implanting starting next year.
