Thanks to the addition of Sony’s Music Unlimited cloud service, a couple of privileged devices will receive the option of streaming music. The devices that will be receiving the feature include the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, Xperia Arc, PSP and NGP (to be released later this year).
The Music Unlimited service will allows users to stream music to their portable device from their own music collection or from the Music Unlimited catalogue.
Those who are familiar with the PlayStation 3 know that Music Unlimited aka Qriocity currently is used by said system to stream music. Music files can be played from a heard drive and streamed to a phone when you’re not at the base system. The Qriocity catalogue will cost £4 a month for the basic service with the more advanced service which includes more channel choices, playlists and on demand listening coming in at £10 for a monthly plan.
As stated before, the service will come to the Sony PSP and Sony Ericsson Android based devices. So far the company does not have an official release date, but according to Sony reps, we should be seeing this one popping out of the company’s research and design labs in a matter of weeks.
If this does take off, it would offer a lot of competition to other cellphone manufactures such as Samsung, HTC and LG who have yet to include some sort of musical application suite for streaming or playback in their devices as of yet and instead rely on the stock or modified Android experience for those musical junkies. This service just might give undecided customers the answer they’re looking for in terms of streaming music from a base system to a portable system.

Sony might be busy bringing the XPERIA Play and NGP to the same playing field while providing some serious competition for its rivals with the Arc, but as everyone knows, the latest biggest thing in the industry are not smartphones, but rather tablets. Sony has expressed interest in getting into the tablet market, but the company would like to create on that differentiates itself from the rest. That is understandable as many companies who are going the Android route are leaving off their customized skins and UI’s and instead opting for the vanilla look of Android 3.0 Honeycomb.
But with Sony launching its gaming platform for Android this year, and with the launch of the NGP and XPERIA Play, this could just be the rumored tablet that the Japanese company decides to use to take on the iPad while providing the best gaming experiences in the mobile arena only Sony could develop.
According to the information, the above image is of a prototype so it should look nothing like that in the end, we’re guessing because that is downright ugly. However, we hear it has a front facing camera that has full 3.0 megapixels, one of the highest we have seen to date, as well as an estimated 6-7 inches of capacitive touchscreen real-estate.
It is branded as an LTE device, so this probably means that it will be heading to Verizon in the United States and hopefully Vodofone here in the UK, albeit without the 4G’s. The version of Android being run on the device is unspecified but we do understand it could be 2.3 like that of the XPERIA Play. No word on a possible release date, and after all, Sony has not brought the NGP or XPERIA Play to the market so it is clear the company has its hands more than full. But if done right, we have no doubt that a Sony tablet with some great titles backing it could be the thing the industry never knew it needed.

It’s not like we have known almost every detail about the upcoming Xperia Play, the device that has been dubbed for ages as the PSP phone. And it’s not like we have not gotten demo after demo not showing us what the hardware looks like, but the function of the software and gaming capabilities of the phone as well.
However, Sony Ericcson decided to use Superbowl XLV to officially announce the phone / gaming device. Of course, most of us never watched it thanks to the fact that it’s American Football. However, you will be glad to know that not only is the Xperia Play officially official at the moment, it will be coming to Vodofone in the UK as well as O2.
The news came via O2’s Twitter page where the company announced the following: “Awesome news – the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is coming to O2.” As usual, the company was prodded for explanations and clarifications as well as more launch information to which the following tweet was sent: “We don’t have much details at the moment but we’ll let you know more before it launches. Watch the space!”
As for Vodofone, we’re hearing from Pocket Link, TechRadar and others that that said company will indeed be getting the Xperia Play although Vodofone has not confirmed such rumors yet.
All is left now is for Sony and Ericcson to convince the world that this device will not end up like another N-Gage (from Nokia), and that it will have the marketing capital to get games out for this system, not to mention the fact that the NGP is set to be released this year and it could potentially pose a problem to potential buyers if the price is similar.

It is official (well, it already was, but this makes it even more official than ever), the FCC listing already has the Sony Ericsson Japan exclusive handset on the listing which mean that this is going to the first super camera phone of 2011.

So why should we care? After all, the device is a Japanese exclusive right? –well, not entirely. While the handset itself was designed to be used with Japan’s local networks, the technology is developed by Sony’s Cybershot team and it will be used in other phones as well. This means that we are certainly going to expect Sony Ericsson to pony up and give us all a smart phone that would easily the wipe the floor even with the Altek Leo.
The handset for Japan is not all that tasty either. It uses a proprietary Java based operating system, has a 1GHz Snapdragon CPU and a 3.3 inch capacitive touch screen display –pretty much your average 2010 smart phone. But as we said, the camera comes with a massively intimidating 16 mega pixels. That number alone is enough to have us forget about Carl Zeiss optics & Xenon flash and thinking that it will be appearing in new devices is certainly exciting to know.
Of course, it is an eventuality that phones would hit the higher mega pixel marks (with 8-12 mega pixels camera popping up here and there for the past few months). The only real question is when. So far, Sony has decided to skip all the awkward numbers past 8 and have jumped through with twice the power. We must admit, the pace is unbelievable, though the price may also be the same. It will not be long before professional level camera hardware will be available for smart phones, and it would not surprise us if Sony sets that milestone first.

Mobile gaming is the number one agenda for the folks who made the XPERIA series of smart phones. Their latest device, XPERIA Play (or possibly the Zeus Z1 gaming handset, also nicknamed erroneously as the Playstation phone) is focused on Android gaming more than anything else. The device looks like a typical touch screen smart phone with a slide out panel.
But instead of the physical QWERTY keyboard, the panel reveals a directional control pad and four buttons. Behind the controls are two hidden shoulder buttons. This means that the Android device is geared for precision gaming controls.
While this may not seem like a big deal, providing Android developers with a device with precision controls opens up a whole new area of development for games. While the number of devices that the game app will support is limited, the fact that users now have the proper gaming controls (as opposed to playing the clumsily programmed platforme on a touch screen) means that hardcore gaming is now possible with the XPERIA Play.
Aside from Android gaming, Sony Ericsson has a couple of other priorities to bring into the spotlight. The first is the ever interesting LiveView touch screen device. While we have never been fond of wrist worn smart phones (though the coolness of a James Bond reference is hard to deny), the LiveView is a device of a different sort –it is an accessory; both to the user and the Android phone.
If you have an Android phone with version 2.0 Éclair or higher, then this is a great device to have. The LV brings up messages, alerts and other important phone functions without the need to bring the device out of your pocket –perfect when you need to be discreet.
Lastly, a new 16 mega pixel camera toting Cybershot smart phone has been released in Japan. While this Sony Ericsson made device may not be brought over to the UK, the camera will most certainly will. Expect to see 16 mega pixel (or higher) cameras from Sony Ericsson this coming 2011.

It may seem silly to skip straight ahead to the bottom line, but the fact of the matter is, nobody really knows if the new gaming handset from Sony Ericsson, the so-called Z1 is actually going to be designated with the Playstation brand.
Sure, it will mean plenty of hype and possibly thousands of misleading sales that would be in favor of the Japanese-Swedish joint venture, but that would also mean lowering the quality and reputation that Sony Computer Entertainment has invested in the Playstation brand.
As some of you may recall, one of the earliest official announcements from SCE regarding the PSP phone is that they would never allow another company or group (even within Sony or with their partners) to take charge of the Playstation brand. Hopefully, this applies true until now.
The only saving grace here is that the moniker of PSP phone did not originate from Sony, Sony Ericsson or SCE; it is the product of countless rumors and news updates about the gaming Android smart phone. Of course, it does not help that the leaked “invitation” image showcased the iconic button icons of the Playstation brand –which adds fuel to the fire.
For Sony Ericsson’s sake, they should avoid using the icons and the brand (if they intend to) unless they can come up with high quality games. Sure, they can create great hardware, but what truly make the Playstation brand so well trusted in the gaming industry is the fact that the games on Playstation systems often meet a certain standard of excellence and quality that even the best app based games cannot possibly hope to match.
So far, Sony, Sony Ericsson, SCE nor any of Sony’s partners have made any announcements specific details regarding the gaming smart phone. While the product itself has never been outright denied, the Playstation branding has always been left as the most unlikely possibility.

Ask any serious or hardcore gamer and they will tell you that app games are as casual as they come. Sure, there are some impressive titles –either by name or by graphic design. But when it all boils down to it, apps suffer plenty in the controls and gameplay department. While there are some task repetitive mini-games that border on the insanely addictive, the lack of game depth as well as complexity in controls will forever leave pure touch screen devices behind their pure gaming counterparts.
The Nintendo 3DS and the upcoming Playstation Portable 2 are noted to sport touch screen displays –which means that even app games may now be accessible to these gaming systems, along with their own line of hardcore titles –which are not limited by size thanks to external media storage such as UMDs or cartridges (there has been some rumors that Sony will be using something other than UMDs for the PSP 2).
Of course, that is all on the gameplay side of things, as an industry however, mobile apps earn plenty of money –so much in fact that many believe that it has the potential to surpass the existing gaming industry. While this is not due to any single famous titles, apps earn money by the sheer volume of people who use smart phones –and as long as that number keeps growing, so will the sales of apps. It is estimated that by 2015, the revenue for the gaming industry will reach up to 7 billion British Pounds. And this explains why there are so many app game developers.
While that is a staggering figure, it also accounts for something that apps also offer: additional micro-transactions. Many apps feature additional content that users have to pay for, the application of in-game purchases has certainly help push the industry’s earnings up.

With the rumors of the “Playstation Phone” now dying down after the latest rumors hinted that the Sony Computer Entertainment will not be involved in the device, the gaming industry now has its focus and excitement on the upcoming PSP 2 –which is not a smart phone at all.
Sony Ericsson will be working on a gaming-centric Android device on its own. While this is certainly interesting, it is hardly exciting for many hardcore gamers. And thus, the mobile platform has once again been denied a position in the heart of the games industry.
But what is it about the smart phone that makes serious gamers turn elsewhere?
There are a myriad of factors that all fall into play once the argument starts going, and above everything else, the most important factor is games. Sure, major game companies do port entire games to the smart phone. Lucas Art’s old point and click titles are available as apps and so is Capcom’s Phoenix Wright. Square Enix also released new mini-RPGs and a couple of old Final Fantasy titles as well. But that is probably as far as it goes. The touch screen is only meant for point and click or menu driven games. Other titles that require accuracy of controls such as fighting games, first person shooters, platformers and many other action titles fail badly with the accelerometer and the touch controls.
Storage media is also another issue. The PSP makes use of UMD technology while the Nintendo DS has its own cartridges. The smart phone relies on downloads. This makes it harder for developers to add in more content as the downloadable size of the installer grows larger.
Lastly, the nature of the mobile phone comes into play. The fact is that hardcore games take plenty of time. Unlike casual apps that can easily be paused or stopped at any moment, hardcore titles have plenty of events that if interrupted by an incoming message or call, would really spoil the mood for the player.

For all the big news about the upcoming PSP phone, it seems that the latest update makes the most sense and at the same time, makes us wonder if all our attention and excitement should be better spent elsewhere.
According to the latest buzz about the PSP phone online; the new device is not a PSP phone.
So what have we all been blabbering about for the past few weeks? Apparently, the next Sony Ericsson device will be an Android gaming handset. While it will have a control pad, buttons and what appears to be the well known button icons used by Sony Computer Entertainment, the device is a full SE product.
This means that the device will not be supported by SCE, and it will not have SCE made games. The only games that will be playable on the device are specially made Android platform titles –to be specific, simple game apps. While this is certainly disappointing for many hardcore gamers hoping to find a smart phone with better features, it at least explains why some facts never seemed to add up.
One initial reservation we have always had is that we know for a fact that SCE would never allow a different Sony department to develop a Playstation brand device. Another is the recently leaked event invite for a December 9 launch of the device –something that SCE would also never do. Of course, there are plenty of other hard to believe rumors that came in between.
The bottom line right here however is that this device does not excite hardcore gamers. The PSP Go failed for focusing more on mini-games (the Playstation Minis game series) and its lack of a UMD tray. While regular PSP games can be downloaded on the Go, it failed to gain a foothold in the industry. With the SE gaming device lacking even decent games, there is little to be expected of this device. It is even likely that it will end up much like the Nokia N-Gage.

There are rumors aplenty about the so-called Sony Playstation Phone, and a recent interview with Sony Ericsson’s big boss, Bert Nordberg has him stating: “no smoke without fire”. And considering the volume of rumors that has popped out, there is plenty of smoke.
But what do we really know? -Officially, not a single thing. But as the big man himself has hinted, all these rumors are based on a simple level of truth. So pulling out all the big updates that have come out in the past few weeks, here’s a quick rundown of everything that we have gathered so far.
First off, the controls will definitely have a directional pad, buttons and possibly, shoulder buttons/triggers accompanying the touch screen display. This is a major factor –as it basically defines the device as a gaming handset over anything else. Also, these controls are important as they provide gamers with precise and accurate control input required for hardcore gaming.
Another important point is that the Android operating system will be the core platform for this device. It is also likely that the Sony Cross Media Browser (XMB) will serve as the main OS skin. The use of the Android foretells of a possible Android Market and Playstation Network tie up in the future. At the very least, the Playstation Minis or the PSP Go has already shown that the PSN can also provide apps alongside deeper and richer titles for the more casual players.
Finally, the best safe estimate for launch would be anytime next year. While some are already claiming that the Mobile World Congress will show the big launch for the device, others are still expecting the launch to happen during a gaming convention instead. Production and development is best handled by Sony’s Japanese teams (as they are most familiar with all Playstation hardware), so a launch in Japan is also most likely as well.
