HTC Fights Back Against Apple’s Lawsuit

Friday, March 19th, 2010

Steve Jobs (3)Having 20 patent infringement lawsuits being filed against a company is more than just a severe legal action, it is also an insult to the work and effort of many of HTC’s engineers and designers. Any artist would consider it an affront to have their work credited as unoriginal, and it is with this same passion that HTC is now defending itself against Apple’s claims that the company has indeed infringed on existing patents.

HTC has been in the mobile device market for a long time where they have played a crucial role in the growth and development of the Windows Pocket PC. They before they even became a part of the Open Handset Alliance, HTC was already at the forefront of mobile phone technology with their many innovations in regards to touch screens, menus and hardware.

To quote HTC CEO Peter Chou:

“HTC disagrees with Apple’s actions and will fully defend itself. HTC strongly advocates intellectual property protection and will continue to respect other innovators and their technologies as we have always done, but we will continue to embrace competition through our own innovation as a healthy way for consumers to get the best mobile experience possible. From day one, HTC has focused on creating cutting-edge innovations that deliver unique value for people looking for a smartphone. In 1999 we started designing the XDA and T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition, our first touch-screen smartphones, and they both shipped in 2002 with more than 50 additional HTC smartphone models shipping since then.”

Jason Mackenzie, VP of HTC USA also added “HTC has always taken a partnership-oriented, collaborative approach to business. This has led to long-standing strategic partnerships with the top software, Internet and wireless technology companies in the industry as well as the top U.S., European and Asian mobile operators. It is through these relationships that we have been able to deliver the world’s most diverse series of smartphones to an even more diverse group of people around the world, recognizing that customers have very different needs.”

Could it Be: Potential HTC HD3 Specs Leaked

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

HTC HD3We are literally drooling all over the place as we saw the recently announced specs for the HTC HD3 smart phone. Most of you may have already given up on the previous HTC HD2 when Microsoft confirmed that the device will not be compatible with Windows Phone 7 mobile platform.

While no word has been given regarding the OS that will be used for the alleged HD3, many are expecting this device to be the first HTC WP7 smart phone.

New to the HD3 is a large 4.5 inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen. While we certainly enjoy having a big screen this certainly makes the phone significantly larger than many other devices already out. The screen will support playback of 1080p HD videos (the screen can handle up to 1280 x 800 pixels of resolution –higher than most net books) and the phone is able to record in 720p HD with the 8 mega pixel snapper with LED flash.

In any case, much like the upcoming iPhone 4G, it seems like 4G devices will make 4 inch screens the new standard. Speaking of which, yes, the HTC HD3 will indeed be 4G compatible. Expect to see killer connection speeds when going online with this device.

The 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor is possibly the new dual core version of the CPU. We can only wait and see how much of a difference 1.5GHz really gives –though we expect to device to be able to run some resource heavy games.

Okay, here is the part where we claim a bit of bullocks: the phone will only be 10mm thick –seriously, that much impressive hardware and they are saying that it will be thinner than the iPhone. Some things sound too good to be true –in case we are wrong, we are going to be the first in line buying this phone.

Preorders for HTC Legend Now Open

Friday, March 12th, 2010

HTC Legend (4)For those who just cannot wait to get their hands on the impressive little HTC Legend Android smart phone (or would simply want to make sure that they have a sure slot), there are now pre orders for the handset available at Play.com.

This successor to the HTC Hero has been long in the making. First seen in the leaked HTC roadmap, the Legend has been the subject of excited discussions about which Android smart phone would be the most successful?

Despite the heavy hardware advantage of devices such as the Desire, the XPERIA X10 and of course, the Nexus One; these smart phones tend to come with high price tags and are therefore not really an option for the average smart phone user (though some are willing to shell out extra for the iPhone –go figure).

Not to say that the Legend is a low end device, it still sits on top of many other devices in the mid range level with its sharp 3.2 inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen, 5 mega pixel camera and the 600 MHz Qualcomm processor.

Adding a stylish touch to the device is its’ aluminum casing and sleek form factor, it has a hard edged touch screen look that some might say is better than that of the Desire (which is just a bit too curvy for some).

It has already been confirmed that Vodafone will be offering the Legend in its contracts. With the device’s heavy focus on social networking capabilities and other 3G functions, Vodafone’s unlimited internet plans make a perfect match for this device. For now, no other operators have confirmed that they will also have the device when it launches on April 12.

Rounding Up HTC’s Coming Devices

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

HTC HD Mini (2)Putting aside all that heavy talk about infringement lawsuits, here is a bit of HTC related news that you might want to chew on instead; a new HTC smart phone will be adding to their already great lineup.

Anyway, the new smart phone is reported to be the HTC Incredible. No word yet on the specific capabilities and features of the device, but it has already been confirmed to be running the Google Android 1.6 Éclair operating system and it will also have a capacitive touch screen, an optical “mouse input” (though we assume that this might be an optical trackpad) and of course, the HTC Sense user interface.

So far, only a US release for the Incredible has been given but many believe that the device will also be released in the UK –and if we are to keep up with the previous trends, the phone would be first given a new name and multi touch capabilities would be enabled for the UK version.

The Incredible comes right on the heels of the upcoming HTC HD Mini. Despite the Mini not being as high end as the original HD2, it does feature the new Windows Mobile 6.5.3 operating system.

In the meanwhile, Android fans might prefer to feast on the upcoming HTC Desire and HTC Legend. Both devices were originally supposed to be launched this March but they were delayed to April.

The Desire is a Snapdragon Android smart phone clocked at the speed of 1GHz and has a 3.7 inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen, a 5 mega pixel camera and of course, the latest Android operating system. This handset is the perfect substitute for the Nexus One.

The Legend on the other hand is a powered-up HTC Hero that brings a 600MHz Qualcomm CPU, a 5 mega pixel camera and a 3.2 inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen –along with a sleek aluminum casing.

HTC HD2: Too Many Buttons for WP7

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

HTC HD2We are kidding about that part with the buttons, but regardless, the HD2 will still not get Microsoft’s new mobile platform

Simply put, the new operating system is not an upgrade of the current Windows Mobile operating system. For all purposes, the Windows Phone 7 series is a completely new OS that will require a full installation on any device to be used.

Getting around the technical details of things, the core system of the HTC HD2 has been designed for the HTC Sense user interface and the Windows Mobile 6.X series. To install WP7 on the device would require more than just a simple downloadable patch or update. And while we certainly doubt that Microsoft and HTC would ever release an official patch, we do expect some resourceful modders to actually come up with desktop software to fully format the HD2 and allow users to install the new OS.

Specs wise, the HTC HD2 is a very impressive smart phone. It has a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and a large capacitive touch screen –two basic factors that are needed for the WP7 OS. Though we certainly doubt that is all there is to running the new OS –and Microsoft has confirmed that fact.

A spokesperson for Microsoft has pegged the lack of “hardware components” on the HTC smart phone as the main reason why they will not be porting over the OS to the device. From a marketing standpoint, placing the OS in an old device would certainly hurt the sales of new devices using the OS. So even if they could run it on the HD2, Microsoft has nothing to gain from the effort.

While this may seem like HD2 owners are in a bad spot, there is always the fact that HTC did announce that they will come out with a WP7 device by the holidays.

New HTC Phones at the MWC

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

HTC Legend (4)HTC is one very productive mobile phone manufacturing company. They have been at it since early this year and they have not stopped since.

January begun with the release of the Nexus One, and HTC made phone that is branded by Google. With March drawing near, HTC has confirmed that two devices that were leaked last year in their roadmap were also going to come out; the HTC Bravo (which is pretty much the basis for the Nexus One) and the HTC Legend, both of these two devices are Android smart phones. The Bravo comes with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor while the Hero successor Legend comes with a Qualcomm 600 MHz processor.

Both of the two devices showed up at the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona, Spain last Sunday as plenty of mobile phone manufacturers, network operators and developers came together to showcase their latest and upcoming wares for the year.

The HTC Bravo was one of the main attractions for HTC as the device promised to bring many of the features that people wanted in the Nexus One (the Nexus one is pretty inaccessible due to the fact that Google has limited its availability to their online store). One big change came for the Bravo though; the device has been renamed as HTC Desire. HTC has yet to comment why the previously masculine sounding name has been given a more effeminate one.

HTC also revealed the HD Mini. Following the success of the HTC HD2, the HD Mini will bring smart phone users access to the new Windows Mobile 6.5.3 Maldives operating system which transforms the previously difficulty to use WinMo OS into a more touch screen friendly system. The HD Mini is expected to be released sometime this April.

HTC’s Third Roadmap Phone to be Released

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

HTC Legend (1)For those who have been keeping tabs on mobile phone news; you may remember that last year, a leaked document showcasing the HTC roadmap of smart phones for 2010 came out around October.

Included in the roadmap is the HTC Bravo –an Android smart phone that became the basis for the Google phone, the Nexus One. The Bravo and the Nexus One shared very similar specs such as the Snapdragon 1GHz processor, a 3.7 inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen and a 5 mega pixel camera. The Bravo is expected to be released sometime this March.

Another device in the roadmap expected to arrive this year is the HTC Legend. This Android smart phone is being heralded as the successor the Hero. Last week KPN dropped the bomb by releasing an announcement that they will have the device available this coming March.

Aside from these two amazing smart phones, the roadmap also gave the specs on six other mobile phones; three Android and three WinMo devices. The other Android devices were named Salsa, Tide and Buzz. So far, no word about these phones has been released. The WinMo phones were named Photon, Trophy and Tera. While it was originally announced that the phones would be using WinMo 6.5, new reports show that the Photon will be released using the new Windows Mobile 6.5.3 Maldives operating system.

Maldives 6.5.3 just got released over the weekend. The update allows capacitive touch screen phones to utilize Windows Mobile with its finger friendly controls.

It has also been confirmed that the Photon will be getting a name change to HD Mini. While the HTC HD2 is still in use, no updates to the HD2’s 6.5 OS have been announced.

HTC Legend Heading to Netherlands

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

HTC Legend (2)While it has yet to be known if this much awaited Hero sequel will be appearing at the Mobile World Conference this Sunday (Valentine’s Day!) at Barcelona, Spain (now that’s a vacation waiting to happen), we do know that the phone will be coming out this March in the Netherlands.

KPN just posted the official page for the HTC Android smart phone and we have to admit, it is envy inducing. Despite the fact that the Bravo has already been confirmed (as well as the XPERIA X10), the beauty about the Legend is the fact that it is not a Snapdragon smart phone. It only uses a 600 MHz processor which places it at a significantly cheaper price than the other high-end smart phones. Yes, it is something we can easily afford.

For those who have no clue what the HTC Legend is, here’s a quick rundown; the device got its premature debut when the HTC 2010 roadmap got leaked. The document revealed around five Android smart phones and three Windows Mobile devices. While the WinMo devices might have been sent to production limbo (they were meant to be used for WinMo 6.5), the Androids looks like they are being produced one after the other –well, the first two at least.

Leading the roadmap lineup was the HTC Bravo, which is already a confirmed March launcher. The HTC Legend has been popping up in the past few weeks as a confirmed device, but so far, no details of a release date has been given. This little tidbit from KPN is quite promising –it is only a matter of time before the phone is available locally.

Aside from the 3.2 inch AMOLED touch screen, 600 MHz processor and the 1300 mAh battery, the official site details reveal FM radio, 256MB of RAM and other interesting specs.

Scorpion and the 1.5 GHz CPU added to HTC List

Friday, February 12th, 2010

HTC Legend (1)Looks like we will not be running short of Android phones this year; it has already been predicted that 2010 will see the most number of Android smart phones produced, but we never guessed that a chunk of these devices will be coming from HTC.

The Taiwanese manufacturer has had a long history with Google’s mobile operating system. They were the one who manufactured the HTC Dream, which is more commonly referred to as the Android G1 phone. HTC has also created the very first Google branded phone, the HTC Nexus One.

Aside from the Android devices that the manufacturer has made with Google, they also have their own successful line of Android phones. The HTC Hero is one of the most successful android phones. The Dream and the Magic are also impressive G1 devices.

Now, the manufacturer will be creating even more devices for the Android line. For now, it has already been confirmed that the HTC Bravo and the HTC Legend will be launched at the end of Q1 2010. Plenty of other Android devices have been linked to the company as well including more three devices from the leaked 2010 roadmap.

New to HTC’s list of upcoming devices is the HTC Scorpion that has been rumored to come packed with a high speed 1.5 GHz processor –easily surpassing existing devices that use the 1GHz Snapdragon CPU. Whether this is a dual core version of the Snapdragon or an entirely new CPU from Qualcomm still remains to be seen.

With rumors that the upcoming iPhone 4G will be running on a dual core processor, it is likely that the Scorpion will be the first Android device that will have the specs to match the Apple gadget.

HTC HD2 is Full of Surprises

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

HTC HD2Yes, you read that right, the HTC HD2.

Now you might be wondering, what could be so important about a device that is so last year? After all, strip away the amazing HTC Sense user interface and you will see that this is simply a glamorized Windows Mobile device that runs on a powerful Snapdragon processor clocked at 1GHz. This successful WinMo phone is still the best in the WinMo department –so far.

Anyway, the big news is that HTC has been hiding some hardware on this phone (yes, not listed on the official specs); the phone packs an erroneously reported amount of RAM.

RAM is actually just as important as processing speed and is a major factor when it comes to loading applications and files. Officially, the HD2 comes with 448MB of RAM. That is already plenty and you can expect to do a lot with that considering that a mobile phone rarely runs slow down inducing applications. But if you use a customized ROM for the HTC HD2, you will be able to unlock the full 576MB of RAM that is currently installed into your phone.

The question now is what good is it? Well, for one thing, it will improve everything over all. Games and applications are not created to utilize only a set amount of RAM. Of course, the biggest use of the RAM will be done by the very same hackers who have found a way to access the hardware.

For those who are sad that the HD2 is no longer available through Vodafone (because Vodafone made it exclusive to their business plans), T-Mobile has taken the opportunity to take on this device and offer it to everyone.

For more info on the hidden and unlisted specifications of the HTC HD2, head straight over to Tech Radar’s official site.
