A Budget Smartphone – the HTC Mega

htc-megaRecent months have seen the net abuzzed with speculation on the leaked-out HTC Mega.  According to the latest from a reliable Dutch source on the net, the Mega will be HTC’s answer to cover the low-end market for a bargain PDA phone running Windows Mobile 6.5.  From what we’ve gathered, it will have a slim 104 x 55 x 12.8mm dimension that makes it pocket-friendly, price-wise as well.

At a glance

It’s interesting to note that the WiFi Alliance has certified a certain HTC Mega 100 handset.  This betrays another hint that it will come with local data connectivity features like WiFi and WLAN 802g.

  • The HTC Mega will be quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and a dual band 3G/WCDMA/HSPA supporting high speed internet.  It will use the Qualcomm MSM7225 engine clocked at 528 MHz.
  • It will run the Windows Mobile 6.5 Pro with the TouchFlo user interface.
  • It will sport a 2.8” QVGA touchscreen, a 3.2 megapixel fixed-focus camera, GPS/A-GPS and Bluetooth 2,0 + EDR and
  • It has a generous 356 MB ROM and another 256MB RAM for users to load apps and files.  It has a microSD expansion slot, presumably capable of up to 16 GB at least as there are now 32GB microSD cards in the market.

A Low-End Market Waits

This may not be the hottest and most anticipated new HTC product to have leaked out on the net.  But we can’t blame eager HTC fans who have fanned the rumours as this is one capable handset.  The pictures leaked out show a very handsome handset that has compromised on certain features like a smallish touchscreen and a simplified camera.  But the specs point to features that are essential for a satisfying mobile phone experience, such as 3G and high speed support and a true multitasking OS, among others.  With a rumoured bargain price as an entry level HTC mobile phone, you can’t ask for more.  We really hope to see the HTC Mega come out in time for Christmas.
