The HTC Mega is now the new HTC Touch 2

HTC Touch2The highly anticipated HTC Mega earlier leaked online with pictures and specs is now a reality with the upcoming HTC Touch 2.   It is launching early October as the first HTC handset to run the latest and most powerful Windows platform for mobile phones, the Windows Mobile 6.5 Pro, on the last quarter of the year with its distribution to markets in Europe and Asia.

There is still no pricing advice but earlier speculation that the compact and slim HTC Touch 2 will be the mid-priced cousin of the heftier flagship HTC Touch Pro 2 remains unchanged.  The HTC Touch 2 or Mega will answer a wider market demand for a touchscreen smartphone with all the features and looks we’ve come to associate with an HTC handset.

Smart Features for an Affordable HTC Phone

Sporting a compact touchscreen form factor with a 2.8” QVGA screen, it’s basically a WCDMA/HSPA and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE handset using a 528MHz Qualcomm CPU.  You won’t get the HTC TouchFLO 3D or a 5 megapixel camera, but no matter.  The HTC TouchFLO 2D is still a remarkably intuitive user interface that allows you instant access to your favourite online apps right from the homescreen.

And because it runs the Windows Mobile 6.5 OS, you get the benefit of accessing the long anticipated Microsoft Marketplace for Mobile for all you’re your apps and gaming needs on the road, as well as the Windows My Phone for online syncing of your media files as well as automatic online phone back-ups.  You also can enjoy real multitasking and desktop-quality browsing experience with a zoon bar that let’s you pan, zoom, and reflow website text to fit the screen.

Modest but Competitive Features

There’s 3.2 megapixel camera with no autofocus, flash or many of the fancy features you see in other imaging smartphones.   It’s got Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and A2DP, 3.5mm headphone jack, WiFi 802.11b/g wireless data connectivity and a microSD memory expansion slot.  There’s GPS/A-GPS with Google Maps as well.  Not bad for a mid-priced touchscreen smartphone.
