Shazam, a leader in mobile music discovery services, has just announced that it has hit 50 million users world wide. According to the company, the number of people who tried the Shazam service has gone up by a whopping 15 million since February this year, which shows us a growing trend relating to the music discovery service, which is becoming more and more popular with mobile phone users across the globe. The company also announced that Shazam is currently available in more than 150 countries. That’s a lot of music discovery!
Because of the popularity the service has enjoyed recently, there are other industry figures becoming interested in it, which led to Shazam today announcing that it will be accepting a strategic investment from Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers – a company already famous for its contributions in the digital marketplace, including Amazon and Google.
“This milestone and the backing of KPCB is a testament to both the success and enormous potential of Shazam,” said the CEO of Shazam, Andrew Fisher. “Not only are significantly more people around the world accessing the service every day, they are using it with increased frequency, discovering and acquiring new music and sharing their discoveries with friends all from their mobile phones. Shazam is profitable and experiencing sustained acceleration in its growth rate. We are delighted to be partnering with KPCB, who join our existing investors Acacia Capital and DN Capital and will help us execute against the significant market opportunity ahead.”
Shazam is certainly a service to watch – their great success will likely mean we see more wanted features appearing faster under their banner; and at this rate they will likely hit 100 million users by the end of 2010. Stay tuned!
