Motorola has not exactly had the smoothest of sailings from the announcement to the actual unveiling and release of the Xoom tablet. Thanks to exorbitant prices, lack of Flash at launch (Adobe says it will be added in the near future) and reviews that thought the software was great but just not polished as yet, it’s kind of hard not to want to dig up something positive on the tablet.
Well we seem to have found something that will have more than a few individuals shouting for joy and this has to do with the price of the device. While the 3G model will be retailing for €699.95 on T-Mobile Germany’s website, the Wi-Fi only version has been found to have a pre-order price of just £450 ($730). This brings it under the offering of the 32GB iPad Wi-Fi model and should be able to woo more than a few buyers seeing that it not only carries front facing cameras, but rear facing ones as well which are capable of full 1080p video shooting.
The pre order price was on PC World’s website but has since been pulled. That said, we’re hoping to see it back up in the near future. As for timing, this could not have come at a better time as Apple is set to announce the features and availability of the iPad 2 which many analysts have speculated could go on sale by early April. If this is the case, Motorola would want to release the Wi-Fi only version of the Xoom within the same time frame if not earlier so it could get a great foothold if not a head start against the iPad 2. We’ll update you when the pro-order comes back online.

So it’s official folks, the Motorola Xoom tablet is indeed coming to Europe, and it will be this year. The device which features Android 3.0 Honeycomb and was named CNET’s “Best of Show” at the Consumer Electric Show will be arriving to Europe sometime in the second quarter of 2011 equipped with it’s awesome 1280×800 resolution and HD video playback, plus HD video out to compatible TV or PC along with a 5 megapixel camera for capturing photos and a 2 megapixel front facing camera for video conferencing. The tablet will be powered by a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and sport 1GB of RAM.
According to Motorola, the tablet will be available in 3G and Wi-Fi only variants and if the leaks of U.S pricing are correct, we wouldn’t be betting that this will drop for less than £1,000 when it hits shelves in the EU and UK.
But thanks to Google’s awesome set of applications such as Gmail, GTalk, and support for the full web experience featuring Flash 10.1, we are not going to put it past consumers to notice this device. However, with the iPad retailing for a little more than £500 we really do not see how Google and Motorola expect to compete with them with such a high price tag. That is almost, if not more, than double the offering of Apple which has been known for years to produce some of the most expensive gadgets in the industry.
However, we’ll just have to wait and see if these rumors hold up or if it was some practical joke. At any rate, with the amount of tablets due out by the end of the year, we are sure consumers should be able to find something within their budget.

The Olympic season is about to arrive and London is all getting glammed up and ready for the major international affair. With wireless communications now becoming a major necessity, the capital is all about making things ready for the deluge of international visitors that are expected to arrive. Part of the preparations is to bring the much needed mobile network service in the Tubes.
France based Thales and Taiwan’s Huawei are both eagerly competing to take the project lead. The demand of the long tube network will certainly require plenty of communications hardware –also to keep up with the large volume of users. Expect to see this project pushing through in the next few weeks.
Motorola’s Milestone 2 is confirmed to be heading to K store shelves. No exact date has been given, but the price has finally been revealed. At 379.99 Pounds, this Android smart phone is definite contender even for the likes of the HTC Desire or the Samsung Galaxy S. Thanks to the slide out QWERTY keyboard and ever impressive design aesthetics of Motorola, this Milestone sequel is one phone that an Android fan cannot afford to pass up.
Mobile network operator Vodafone UK has announced that they will be adding two new smart phones to their plans and tariffs. The Nokia C7 is an obvious choice for those looking for a decent budget smart phone thanks to its well rounded features. The HTC Desire Z brings plenty of functionality thanks to its slide out QWERTY keyboard.
In the meanwhile, things are not looking good for HP and more importantly, for Palm. The WebOS 2.0 powered Pre 2 has been ignored by network operators limiting the distribution of the device. However, things have turned for the worse as security issues in the WebOS 2.0 platform have also been revealed.

For those who want to get the latest scoop on all of the biggest news stories of today, here’s a quick list of all the big headlines to keep you up to date.
iOS 4.2 update is out and it brings plenty of new features for the Apple iPad touch screen tablet. While the new version is good for the iPod Touch and the iPhone as well, the real focus here is with the 9.7 inch tablet. With new Android tablet devices coming out, that added functionality is going to be pretty useful once people start realizing that lacking Flash support is a major flaw.
Microsoft is facing a backlash from the tech industry as it has been reported that the micro SD card compatibility issues of the OS are pretty hard to fix. Unless Microsoft is able to find a way to fix the issue, many media loving smart phone users will be sticking to the Android or iPhone instead.
Acer is taking on Dell’s 5 inch Streak with a new, yet-to-be-named mobile phone. The touch screen smart phone is said to be running the Android OS on what appears to be a 4.8 inch touch screen display. It looks like the two computer manufacturers are all set to fill in the gap between smart phones and tablets pretty fast.
The Tegra 2 running Android smart phone from Motorola is getting a name and plenty of leaked images. The Olympus is said to be one impressive handset that Android fans should look out for as it may very well set the new bar for the next generation of devices. With all the odd devices they had come up recently (the Flip, Defy, etc), Motorola seems to be back with that innovative spirit once again. As for getting released in the UK, we will have to wait and see if the Olympus ends up as another pseudo-US exclusive handset for a couple of months.

Strategy Analytics has officially announced that Apple’s iPhone sales have now surpassed that of RIM’s BlackBerry handsets. The folks at Cupertino have taken an ego bruising blow from Google several weeks back when it was announced that they were trailing behind the leader pack in distribution right after Android distribution surpassed both BB OS and iOS devices. With 14.1 million handsets being brought out to the market, Apple is now aiming its sights at catching up to the Android. RIM made 12.1 million units during the same economic period.
Phone manufacturer Samsung has announced that profits has risen a dramatic 12% for this quarter. With 71.4 million handsets being sold all over the world in the past three months, it is no wonder that this Korean phone maker stands as the third largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world. The sales of the Android Galaxy series, particularly, the Galaxy S, has further pushed the Samsung brand’s reputation in the smart phone industry.
LG on the other is not doing so well, the current sales shows a significant decrease from their performance last year –an outstanding 99% decrease is hitting the Korean phone maker pretty hard. As a precursor this, LG’s CEO has recently stepped down from his post as inactivity within the company has seen a continued decrease of profits for LG this year.
Motorola has just announced that sales are now continuously growing. While the situation for the phone maker was not as dire as it was for Sony Ericsson last year, the fact that Motorola was bordering on the red for the most of 2009 was not a good sign. With the release of the DROID/Milestone series, the company has since picked up its pace and is expected to bring in a better profit margin in the coming months.

When we say that the launch of the very first Motorola Milestone is a major milestone for the development of Android smart phones, we are making more than just obvious puns. The arrival of the Milestone (1), or rather, the Motorola DROID in the US, was a big thing for the Android community; a massively impressive handset using Google’s open source platform and comes with a physical QWERTY keyboard.
Not that the Android needs a keyboard in the first place –the only thing you need is a decent capacitive touch screen and you are good to go. However, the presence of a physical keyboard enables something else –the ability to type and chat without having to deal with a virtual touch screen keyboard. While some might say that newer virtual keyboards are becoming more efficient with the presence of technology such as SWYPE, the fact is that the lack of physical feedback is a major issue.
And that is why the arrival of the Milestone was such as big thing. Now, the Motorola is at it again with the upcoming launch of the Milestone 2. According to sources, the official launch of the handset will be on November 17 and right now, the device is already available on pre-order. Those who want that handset as soon as it launches can get it for 449 GBP SIM free though we can expect to see various contract offers for the device.
Specs wise, we can definitely say that the Milestone 2 is an upgrade to the original handset. The CPU is now up to today’s current standards with the 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 and the 5 mega pixel snapper is certainly going to make camera buffs quite happy. The only gripe we have with the device is the new design –which deviates from the rougher polish that the original Milestone had. But in terms of hardware and performance, the Milestone 2 has the definite advantage.

It seems that the mobile phone industry cannot go for a long period of time before the next major issue regarding a patent infringement lawsuit pops out. Not that there has been any significant progress in any of the previous cases.
Anyway, the interesting bit about the new lawsuit is the fact that Apple is not involved in the case. This time, Microsoft is suing Motorola regarding the alleged use of MS owned technology in some of Motorola’s Android devices. Considering that Microsoft’s biggest contender in the industry is the Google Android OS, this is going to be an important lawsuit. And a win for Microsoft could spell certain trouble for the Android OS
Moving on to other news; Steve Ballmer was at the London school of Economics when he gave a few comments about current trends in technology. He clarified Microsoft’s stand regarding tablet devices (and unofficially promised that Microsoft will be offering a new tablet this December).
What was more important is that Steve discussed in detail what he sees in location based apps. In many ways, the feature is an important aspect of mobile phone technology that is not yet fully explored. For now, apps such as Facebook Places and Foursquare provide users with rudimentary content and what he calls “small innovations”. However, Steve also stressed the fact that: “small innovations can have a big impact if they change the way we think about the world.”
He also feels strongly about the use of cloud technology. With plenty of people now starting to see the value of cloud storage and even cloud processing, smaller is definitely better. All the hardware based performance aspects as getting limited to what cloud servers have to offer, and more often than not, that is already plenty to work with.
Of course, Ballmer also states that it is not all about the cloud, the world also needs better smart phones for accessing all those online resources.

There are going to be two dual SIM handsets from Motorola coming out soon. The EX115 and the EX128 have been bobbing up and down the rumor pool so they have not been getting much attention. But now, with a little more prodding from the phone maker themselves, it seems that the two phones are finally going to see the light of day.
Sadly, spec details on the handsets are still off limits at this time, but the initial images certainly reveal a lot of important details.
First off, the EX115 is pretty much like a standard BlackBerry or Palm QWERTY handset. From the small 2.X-inch screen to the portrait oriented QWERTY keyboard. Hopefully, the keys on this device will be similar to the ones on the Milestone so that typing on it will be easy too. The EX128 on the other hand, is a touch screen device –a rare occurrence for dual SIM smart phones. Both handsets are expected to hit stores with retail prices close to the 100 Euro mark.
LG has confirmed the release dates for the Optimus One and Optimus Chic mobile phones. After a recent announcement about a WP7 based Optimus device, the One and Chic are now getting some extra focus as well. Set to be released later this week (the announced date is September 14), the two phones will be coming out in an event to be held in the morning of the 14th.
Speaking of September 14, Nokia also has a little event planned on that day. While little is known about what the Finnish phone maker would actually be announcing, many are expected to catch a glimpse of the new Nokia N9 smart phone. Taiwan based HTC is slated to have an event on the following day, the 15th. Speculations point to a possible showing of the HTC Vision and the HTC Desire HD.

If there is one thing about the Android operating system that we should all be familiar with by now, it the fact that it is one of the most adaptive and well distributed platforms to have ever existed.
Google has officially stated that the Android operating system has been designed with smart phones in mind. Not netbooks and not tablet devices. In fact, Google has stated that they are working on a platform specifically for the above stated purposes, which is mostly likely the Chrome OS. But that does not stop manufacturers from using the Android on tablet devices –after all, the popularity of the OS name alone is enough to sell the devices.
Samsung is actually taking a quick cue from Google –in the essence that the Galaxy Tab P1000 is not really a touch screen tablet. Instead, the device is an oversized smart phone. Thanks to the fact that it can handle voice calls, this tablet is making quite the stand among its competitors (or competitor, as the only other tablet available is the iPad). The 7 inch touch screen is noticeably smaller, though far more ergonomically sound in terms of use.
Toshiba is also jumping into the Android bandwagon and considering how well made the Folio 100 looks like, it is easy to see how the new tablet seems to be designed to take on Apple’s initial offering head on. Toshiba’s doing a play by play follow through so carefully that they even made two devices –one without 3G support and another with the feature. So far, only the non-3G version has been shown off.
Lastly, it seems that Motorola is also eager to release its’ own tablet device. Various sources have leaked the fact that a Motorola MZ600 tablet has been appearing though further details on the device’s actual specs have yet to be revealed.

The Android mobile platform is truly getting around. It has been a much anticipated hope for many fans of the mobile platform to get handsets that feature physical slide out QWERTY keyboard and Motorola has been one of the first to comply with the request. While there are now plenty of other Android smart phones that have slide out keyboards, the Motorola Milestone is still a much loved device.
The Milestone-creating phone maker is attempting to make a second round of it all with the announcement for the Motorola Milestone 2. While this device has been pretty much expected, seeing it confirmed is great news. The new phone still uses the same old futuristic look of the original Milestone, though this new one is less rugged and a lot classier looking.
Expect the spec sheet of the Milestone 2 to easily surpass that of the previous version, though at this point, very little is known about the device. One thing is confirmed at least: the device will be running Android 2.2 Froyo. This new version of the Android OS is much faster than the previous versions (in terms of user interface and web browsing) thanks to better kernel memory management and Java script handling.
Another new Motorola handset is the Defy. Named after its own concept, this mobile phone was designed to defy the challenges that face mobile phones in life. While Motorola has heavily stated that the device not be dropped from heights or submerged in water, one cannot help but be tempted when looking at the heavy duty frame of the smart phone.
The Motorola Defy is confirmed to be water and dust resistant, so expect this device to run without any issues even after being spilled with water, but it will certainly not last long if submerged in over a meter deep of water.
