Nokia Introduces Braille Text Messaging

Nokia BrailleNokia has always been an innovative and popular company for its amazing product ideas, and now, as theregister.co.uk has revealed, Nokia has created the ability to send text messages written in Braille, and can be read on the company’s latest touch screen mobile phone.

Naturally, when it comes to using mobile phones blind people don’t have too many difficulties thanks to the fact it is primarily an audio task – however they are at a severe disadvantage when it comes to reading text messages; which is why Nokia has created a Braille reader that can read the messages and then use vibrations to relay them to the user.

While there are already several models of mobile phones that can read text messages out aloud, this is not always the easiest or best option. For example, when in a movie theatre, on loud public transport or when the text message could be of a more personal nature, you don’t really want to use a feature that might loudly state “I love you pooky! Get that cute butt home, and bring some wine!” – while we aren’t judging your pet names, the other people on the bus might.

Although there are hopes in the future for raised bumps to magically come out of your mobile phone’s screen that remains impossible right now, so Nokia have kindly made the Braille reader available for free download to an existing device – we think it is a great option for blind users, and will remain so until 10 or 20 years from now those on screen bumps are made possible and reading text message via Braille vibrations seems almost barbaric.

Well done, Nokia!
