Finnish mobile phone producer Nokia, a world leader in the telecommunication industry, has just been named the world’s most sustainable technology company. Already the largest handset manufacturer in the world, it now has something new to lay claim to after the 2009 – 2010 edition of the highly prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes revealed its amazing sustainability ranking today. While having been previously rated as the front runner in the Communications and Europe categories for the past few years it has now been crowned the “World Technology Supersector Leader” – making it the most sustainable company anywhere in the world.
Rick Simonson, the executive vice president and chief financial officer for Nokia responded to the news, stating that “Achieving the world number one slot across the entire global technology industry is a great achievement” and further commenting that “We remain committed to action in this area because acting responsibly is not only the thing to do, it is also undoubtedly the best thing for our business.”
For the past ten years or so Nokia has been a leader in the technology sector when it comes to being environmentally conscious, and has made sustainable activities a priority in that time. All of the company’s mobile phone handsets were, and continue to be, designed in environmentally friendly ways, from their parts to their energy consumption and packaging, as well as their recycling process.
Nokia has stated that it will continue to strive to use more green electricity and remain dedicated to creating environmentally sound products in an environmentally conscious way.
We congratulate Nokia on its new found sustainability status; something it definitely deserves.
