The Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition Rises from its Xpress Music Cousin

Nokia 5800 Navigation EditionMobile phone leader Nokia releases a re-tuned Nokia 5800 touchscreen smartphone but without its “Comes With Music” preloaded apps.  Instead, you get one of the best navigation features in the market.  So out with the Xpress Music branding and in with the Navigation Edition, the new handset comes pre-installed with a lifetime license for its navigational guidance system that you can listen to as it’s voice-driven.  It also gets the latest Ovi Maps.  These should appeal to the more tech savvy navigation geeks who want pinpoint accuracy of wherever they want to go that they have no idea how to get to.  It also packs useful information like as weather reports and local traffic situation and warnings.

Nokia 5800 features

Apart form its upscale GPS features, the new Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition sports the usual 5800 features.  It’s a quad band GSM with 3G/HSDPA/HSUPA for no-wait browsing, messaging and downloading over the internet with a slim monoblock dimension weighing a pocket friendly 109 grams. It runs on the latest Symbian OS S60 release 5.0.

  • It sports a gorgeous 3.2“ QVGA TFT resistive touchscreen display supporting 16 million colors and a proximity sensor that turns off the touchscreen when putting the handset against your face in a call.  There’s also the usual accelerometer for automatic portrait and landscape viewing with the corresponding tile of the handset.
  • It has stereo FM radio with RDS receiver, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR with A2DP support for using wireless stereo earphones and  Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g for wireless local data connectivity at 54 Mbps.
  • It’s got a 3.15 megapixel autofocus camera with Carl Zeiss optics and LED flash.  VGA recording is at film quality of 30 fps.  There’s a second VGA camera for 3G video calls.
  • Its internal memory is a shared 128 MB that can go up to 16GB with its microSD expansion slot.  Its sales packages comes with an 8 GB microSD card.

Availability

Estimated to arrive at a price point of €285 by the end of the 3rd quarter of 2009, the new Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition should appeal to the more tech savvy crowd more interested in navigation-assisted handsets.  It even comes with a car charger and a mounting kit for your car.
