O2 is preparing to welcome the Sony Ericsson Naite, a green phone well suited to the oxygen loving company, we imagine. The network will be the first to sell the Naite mobile phone, which is an environmentally friendly handset that is made largely from recycled, (and recyclable,) plastic materials.
The Sony Ericsson Naite is sold in minimal packaging in order to reduce waste, and rather than coming with the standard paper instruction manual, you will find an electronic manual on the mobile phone itself. (Luckily it is simple enough to turn on – we see a lot of crazy designs here, and I know I’ve had to look at a paper booklet at least once to find the on switch!)
Either way, most users never even open up their manuals, preferring just to get to know their new device by playing around with it – so this is a good step in reducing paper usage and something we would really like to see other companies trying; plus, a phone manual in your phone seems like it fits the trends these days.
Besides the electronic manual, the Naite also includes and application called “Ecomate”, which will let you calculate your carbon footprint. The app can show you how much less carbon dioxide you are producing by walking rather than driving – a great motivation for those of us struggling to walk to the store in the rain. There is also a 2 mega pixel camera, 3G connectivity and additional memory options of up to 8 GB.
O2 will offer customers purchasing the Sony Ericsson Naite the option of either taking a gift such as an eco friendly solar powered charger, or alternatively making a donation to charity.
