The Good and the Bad of the Sony Ericsson Yari

Sony-Ericsson-Yari

Although it may not actually be the PSP phone that has now received near mythical status, the new Sony Ericsson Yari still has a lot of gaming capabilities in it. This is brought about by the integration of an accelerometer that doesn’t only facilitate in the auto-rotate function, but also allows gesture-gaming. Read on below to see what kind of appeal the Sony Ericsson Yari will have on gamers.

The Good Side

Sony-Ericsson-YariThis review wouldn’t be worth reading if we weren’t to discuss the Yari’s new innovative feature which is gesture-gaming. You can actually use the mobile in two ways. You can either utilize it like a Wii remote wherein you’d need to swing the mobile like a bowling ball, for instance. Or another option is to stand in front of the device and let the camera pick up your movements and translate it into virtual game actions. Surely the Yari is somewhat of a pioneer in this field (although gesture-gaming was first seen in the DoCoMo FOMTAM 904i which is only available in Japan).

The Bad Side

The reason why Nintendo has not come up with a portable Wii is probably because it is quite difficult (and somewhat embarrassing) to play these types of games in public. This is one of the reasons why some believe that mobile phones are not ready for this technology yet. Moreover, at this early point there is no information on the extent of support game developers are willing to give out. Will there be any new games or are we stuck with only Fitness and Boxing?

Nonetheless Sony Ericsson has recently announced the launch of the PlayNow Arena which allows users to buy and sell applications on the virtual network. This may somehow help its cause.

The Final Say

Although the motion-based gaming capability of the Yari is commendable, this isn’t actually the first one to have it (i.e. Sony Ericsson F305). Function-wise though, the Yari is a much better mobile than its predecessor. It will have an estimated value of well over £300 once it is released in November or December.
