Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 Unveiled

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Samsung might be planning big announcements at MWC, however, that does not mean that the company is going to wait until the event on February 14th in order to continue the expansion of its Galaxy line.

As of today, the Android equipped Galaxy Ace S5830 has become official thanks to Samsung’s Indonesian website. And according to the specifications, all the rumored software and hardware specifications have been confirmed.

The phone will be running an 800 MHz Hummingbird CPU that will power the phones Android 2.2 Froyo operating system. The display is a 3.5 inch capacitive HVGA resolution slab of glass. There is a 5 megapixel camera included on the phones back which will be able to shoot 720p video.

Other features include Bluetooth 2.1 and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and dual band on the 900/2100 MHz spectrum with 3G data support and 7.2Mbps HSDPA support. The phone is quad-band and will support GSM/GPRS/EDGE. microUSB and a 3.5mm jack for listening to tunes is included.

So far it has been yet to be seen when the device will be released, but Samsung has had a track record of pumping out devices at a fast rate so we wouldn’t be surprised if this one were to hit no later than summer of this year and judging by the phones GSM and HSDPA bands, we suspect this one will be marketed within the Asia, African and European region though the phone could eventually cross the seas and land in either South America or up north in Canada on Bell Mobility as well as the U.S thanks to AT&T and maybe T-Mobile.

The phone will fall in Samsung’s midrange Galaxy line which should provide plenty of competition to the likes of Motorola, LG and ASUS within the same line.

Nokia’s Big 2011 Plans and Other News

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

Finnish phone maker Nokia has been in a bit of a bind this year. They have been affected by delays, bad reviews and of course, a growing degree of consumer disinterest. Indeed, this year has not been good for the world’s largest phone maker.

But despite the fact that the Symbian OS is losing ground (especially now that the Symbian Foundation has become a licensing organization), Nokia still intends to break new grounds in the smart phone industry. During the 2010 International Mobile Internet Conference in Beijing, Gunther Kottzieper (Senior Manager) has confirmed that the company has plenty of new and exciting plans for the coming year.

The user interface of the Symbian OS will certainly be a prime target of updates, providing users with better accessibility and controls. Of course, new phones are also part of the big plans. Right now, with all the focus on the NVIDIA Tegra, there is little surprise that Nokia plans to launch new dual core handsets to take advantage of the new technology. A new camera phone with actual zoom lens is also in the works as well.

In other news, Froyo updates will be coming to a couple of Android smart phones. The first is for the Dell Streak, which is due to come out later this week. According to owners of the handset with a massive touch screen, this is going to be a major plus for the device that has not been updated to Android 2.1 Éclair at all despite being launched as a 1.6 Donut handset.

Another Android device will be getting the Froyo: the HTC Magic. Vodafone UK owners will be happy to know that the HTC Magic has not been forgotten and an update to the OS for the longest time –it is one of the oldest Androids around next to the Dream.

Mobile Updates: Today’s Big Headlines

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

HTC has got a massive triple update for the tech industry. First up are two devices launching in the US –which is normally not our concern, but as proven since time and time again, US carrier exclusives are hardly just that. In fact, many devices there are originally mean to be exclusive still ended up in local store shelves in the UK –the only difference being the fact that the name of the handset has been changed a bit.

The third bit of news concerns the launch of the HTC Legend Froyo update. Of course, those under Vodafone UK and Orange Mobile are not really concerned at all about this –considering the fact that their updates have been out for quite some time now. This new update for Froyo is available for PAYG, SIM-free and other HTC Legend users.

LG has just acquired VMware and from the looks of it, they have a pretty solid game plan in mind. The Korean phone maker seems set on creating a new office phone –one that combines the leisure of a personal device, and one with security protocols for business users. This is achieved through the use of a virtual machine which creates a secondary system on the device –one that can be controlled by an IT department.

Speaking of LG, their newly launched P500 Optimus One smart phone will not be updated to beyond 2.2 Froyo (which means that the Gingerbread is out of the question). As for the reason why, nobody truly knows; the Facebook page for the LG phone states that it does not have a 1GHz CPU –which is in no way a requirement for the latest Android version. Hopefully, LG will be clearing up this matter.

Lastly, ZTE’s UK sales performance has just been released, showing a massive jump from 1.5 million to 4 million in terms of sales from last year to this year.

Mobile News: OS Updates and Developments

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

The open source, Linux based MeeGo operating system is not yet out, but it is already receiving a few changes to the system. A recent announcement by AMD has informed the mobile industry that the Linux developer will now be teaming up with both Nokia and Intel as they also join the MeeGo development team.

This latest update brings the upcoming MeeGo operating system as something that is far more than a foray by Nokia and Intel in the platform industry. AMD’s partnership with the two companies could mean that the OS will certainly be something we can all look forward to.

In Android related news, the 2.3 Gingerbread update is already making plenty of Google fans excited though the exact release date has yet to be officially pinned down, some speculations even stated that the OS upgrade would be released as soon as today. Of course, unless Google makes an official decision, it is impossible to make a final date. Naturally, devices under various networks would still have to rely on specific updates for their handset.

Speaking of which, HTC Legend owners under Vodafone UK will be happy to know that the update to version 2.2 Froyo is already underway for the smart phone. This confirms earlier reports that the Legend handset would also be getting a major OS update –the same report also stated that the HTC Wildfire might also get an update of its own.

Lastly, it seems that the iOS 4.2 update will not be available anytime soon. Cupertino based Apple has yet to make an official statement, but initial reports has indicated that the delay is being caused by WiFi issues. Once this error has been fixed, we can all expect to see the new OS upgrade to be released.

Android News: Today’s Big Headlines

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

The Android OS has been making plenty of waves in the past couple of weeks. Despite the overwhelming surge of updates regarding the upcoming Windows Phone 7, it seems that nothing can really get in the way of the unstoppable growth of the Google Android.

The biggest news of the week comes with some details of the upcoming Android 3.0 Gingerbread. The new version of the Android OS brings together several key features that have been planned by the folks at Mountainview for quite some time.

The big new focus on version 3.0 however, is stability. The biggest problem that Google has faced is the fragmentation of the Android OS. In more detail, the simple fact that there are so many handsets that use the OS that no two are alike in terms of user experience. Add in the fact that the system can be altered and changed using to many internal settings and downloadable apps that creating a uniform user experience is completely out of the question –but that is where the Android’s strength lies. And this is why stability will be a big new factor for Google.

Smoother is the best way to describe how Google is promising the next Android UI to be. The previous version, 2.2 Froyo, already brought an incredible surge in speed as the new OS was performing about three to five times faster than version 2.1 Éclair –and by then, the Android was already pretty fast and stable.

Originally, it was announced at the Google I/O conference that the next update to the OS would arrive by the end of this year (at that time, it was still a month before the launch of the Froyo). However, the slow migration of Android devices to the newer OS as well as development issues has delayed the launch of Gingerbread. Many believe that the new version will be out by the start of 2011.

Mac Support for WP7, 3 Delays Froyo Update for HTC Desire

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

The Windows Phone 7 mobile platform is certainly making plenty of headlines these past few days and while there are a lot of people excited about the new operating system, the fact that it is Microsoft based OS is certainly alienating owners of Macs.

It has been pretty much established that the Zune media player –an earlier device from Microsoft is not generally compatible with the Mac’s operating system. The fact that special software is needed in order to connect the device meant that using the WP7 on a Mac was not going to be a simple plug and play.

However, it has been announced by Microsoft that they will be releasing a new client for Macs that would allow WP7 owners to instantly connect to the Mac and have their phones accessed using the iTunes and iPhoto software. Those who are already own the iPhone would find very little issue with this feature as it provides users with a familiar software for use with their mobile phone.

Moving on, it seems that mobile virtual network operator 3 UK will be delaying the launch of the Android 2.2 Froyo update for owners of the HTC Desire. Originally, the update was supposed to launch last September or this October. However, after considering the fact that other networks had issues with the update (such as on O2 where some users reported that their devices had bricked), it seems that the delay has become a necessary evil.

HTC Desire users have plenty to look forward to with the new Froyo update. The new OS version brings more functionality to the Android operating system and improves already existing features such as the user interface for the camera and updating Exchange. Speed and performance of the UI and the browser have also been given a significant boost.

Galaxy Tab: Oversized Android Phone to Launch on Nov 1

Monday, October 4th, 2010

To call the Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab as an oversized Android smart phone may seem a little goofy –but the truth is what it is, the Galaxy Tab is currently the largest Android smart phone that we know of.

Unlike other tablet devices that are being announced –as well as the Apple iPad, the Galaxy Tab has phone functions. It can make and receive voice calls and SMS messages; a feature that is lacking in other devices. This is actually a big difference in terms of hardware, though we seriously doubt the practicality of the idea. While the inclusion of SMS is pretty convenient, the ability to handle voice calls is not exactly something that we are sure we would like in a tablet.

After all, being interrupted from reading an eBook, watching a streaming movie or even playing an app game is acceptable with a standard phone -but not when you are handling a tablet. Still, it is an added charm; despite the fact that the secondary function is more suited to desktop devices.

In any case, the Galaxy Tab is confirmed to be available on store shelves by the time November 1 hits.

This means that fans of the Korean manufacturer will finally get to try out the powerful Android 2.2 Froyo running device. While we certainly will not recommend this device as a replacement for a mobile phone, it does an extremely satisfying job as a touch screen media tablet device instead.

It can handle eBooks, videos, games and a wide variety of other functions. Also, the pre-loaded Google functions also look amazing on the larger screen. Browsing through the content on Google Earth and Maps is simply breathtaking. The touch screen controls are also far more intuitive that fiddling around with a mouse.

With only a month away before the official launch, those planning to get this tablet better start saving up.

Mobile News Bits: Updates and News from UK Networks

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

T-Mobile UK is promising something special for users of the Samsung i9000 Galaxy S at the end of this month: the Android 2.2 Froyo will be made available for the smart phone ahead of schedule. For users of the phone on other networks, the expected update launch is set for early next month. This means that T-Mobile subscribers get to enjoy Flash and improved OS and web browsing performance ahead of their peers by the end of September.

Speaking of the Froyo update, the much delayed Orange Mobile UK Froyo update for the HTC Desire has finally been rolled out. Originally, Orange was able to make the update available as scheduled but had to it pull down due to technical issues that the update brought.

While it certainly took them quite some time to come up with a solution, they have finally done it and are now making the update available to all HTC Desire users under their network. It is advisable for those planning to download the update to do so under a secure and stable connection as the patch is about 90MB in size.

On a much larger news scale, T-Mobile, Orange, O2 and Vodafone are all confirmed to be offering Windows Phone 7 handsets when the new mobile platform finally comes out this coming October. Microsoft seems to have made well laid out plans as they have been able to get devices into all networks –effectively expanding the market viability of the new OS.

With several other powerful platforms already established on the market, it is important for MS to be able to show that the new WP7 platform is as flexible and versatile as they had promised.

Lastly, 3 UK has confirmed that they will be offering the Nokia C7 nHD smart phone later this year. The new media centric Symbian device will be sporting a 3.5 inch nHD touch screen display and support for HD video.

Google and Partners: the Real Deal

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

The Dell Streak, Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 and other new handsets that sport earlier versions of the OS are not being made to sabotage Google –that would be an unfeasible way of going about it. But rather, the older versions are being chosen for their stability and compatibility –with promises of updates to newer Android versions in the future.

Yes, it is true that the Android’s biggest failings come in the form of cross platform compatibility –or as the situation stands, the lack thereof. As Techradar’s Gary Marshall states, it is through this that Google’s partners are ruining Google itself –either intentionally or not.

That however, is not as true as it may seem. Google has long been aware of the Android’s biggest flaw: that fact that it is open source and is used in a lot of phones. Getting the same performance and specs of two different Android devices from different manufacturers is difficult and as one can see with the continued delays in the launch of 2.2 Froyo updates, the issue still stands.

But this is not a problem being caused by manufacturers. It is a situation that Google has known would happen and has long been working on to solve. In the previous Google I/O conference, they discussed as to how the upcoming 3.0 OS is being intended to be the stabilizing standard for all iterations of the platform.

At the same time, while the above mentioned issue is considered to be a weakness, it is also Android’s greatest asset as well. The fact that it is an open source platform means that developers have plenty of room and freedom to create applications. More importantly, the fact that it is used on so many handsets has made it one of the fastest growing mobile platforms ever released.

In fact, industry experts and business analysts predict that the Android would eventually surpass even the Symbian OS in terms of distribution –despite the fact that the Symbian has been around for many years.

Apple’s New Patent, Nokia C6-01 and Samsung’s G-Tab

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

The Google Android operating system is going big with the upcoming launch of the Samsung Galaxy Tab. According to initial speculations, the new touch screen tablet will be sporting the new Android 2.2 Froyo operating system and the device will be supporting voice call functionality effectively making it one large mobile phone –which is probably why Samsung still includes the device in the Galaxy line up.

In any case, the Korean phone maker has yet to reveal other details about this upcoming gadget.

Speaking of upcoming, Apple has an interesting little patent that was put into focus by the tech website Patently Apple. The new technology being developed (on paper at least) is a way to combine the microphone with the audio jack.

The innovation will help mobile phones by adding in a secondary audio source and could be used to help filter out noise much like a dual speaker system would be capable of doing.

This technology seems to have been in the Apple patent cupboards for quite some time and it is actually quite a shame that they did not implement the technology on the recently released iPhone 4. Hopefully, other upcoming devices for Apple would be able to integrate the feature or some derivation of it.

Last on our news updates is a quick update from Nokia. Apparently, a Bulgarian operator accidentally placed the image of the Nokia C6-01 on an ad that was meant for the C6-00. The issue was quickly rectified and the image of the C6-01 is now associated with the right name.

While initial concepts for the Nokia C6-01 where showcasing a physical slide out QWERTY keyboard, the final product loses this add-on for a sleeker form factor. Since the older C6-00 already sports a keyboard, it is nice to see a small degree of variation when it comes to choosing a handset from the entire Nokia C-series.
