Qualcomm’s Brew OS might see some action in the new HTC Touch device. The new phone, originally called the HTC Rome resurfaced in recent news as the HTC Touch.B.
Most rumors indicated that the new device will be using the Android platform, while this looked quite possible, the leaked images showed a button layout that was not complementary to the Android OS. For one thing, it has a home button but it lacked a back function. The rest of the pictures were not indicative of any other features, aside from the micro USB slot on the bottom and the 3.5mm audio jack on top (which hints at music playback capabilities –no surprise there as most mobile phones can play music).
Also, some of you may remember the news last month that the Qualcomm developed OS, named Brew MP was supposed to have a device under HTC. The plan was set back for unannounced reasons –quite possibly because HTC was still focusing on the HD2 and the upcoming Hero (and all the Android updates that are supposed to go with it).
One conflict that the rumor has was that the phone was intended to be a low-end budget Android smart phone, a position already taken by HTC’s own Tattoo smart phone. It did not make sense for HTC to release two devices that would compete with each other in such a specified market niche.
From the looks of it, the new Touch.B (reports indicate that the B may stand for “Brew”) will be sporting Qualcomm’s Brew MP operating system and further details about the device will be given once February comes around –just in time for the Mobile World Congress.
In the UK, the Brew is known for Skype Phone users. This OS has a larger following in the United States and it has been praised for it’s built in Adobe Flash Integration.

HTC Rome: Android or Brew?

Pictures tell a lot, despite the source pictures speaking in French; we can tell a lot has changed since the initial rumors of the HTC ROME first came out.
The sleek looking ROME (or should we now call it the “Touch.B”?) has some leaked pictures and they look great. The external case has a nice matte finish and what seems to be a classic black gloss over the screen. The control buttons right below the touch screen looks like they are made of soft rubber –here’s a bet that the response feedback may feel squishy but still responsive. There’s a micro USB slot on the very bottom of the device, and a 3.5mm audio jack on the top.
Taking device cues from their original HTC Touch, the Touch.B has that same sophisticated air about it. Making it look more like a phone for business than pleasure. There’s also a nice big button below the screen (looks like it’s a home button), but in some of the angled shots, the location looks awkward.
The images placed the phone in an empty background without any object references for size (they should take a cue from the folks who leaked the Sony Ericsson Kurara images), but with the audio jack and the micro USB slots for reference, we can see that this sleek little candy bar phone is pretty slim.
The images of the back of the mobile phone shows that Rome will come packed with a nice little built-in camera (the metal casing around the lens is a nice touch). The big news now is that the device will be using the Google Android operating system and is currently named as the HTC Touch.B –basing from the images that is.
HTC has recently been successful with their HD2 and people are looking forward to the Hero (which is rumored to be upgradeable to Android 2.0). Should the Rome/Touch B also have Android 2.0 as an OS, this will be HTC’s second next-gen Android phone.
