The Nokia 2730 Classic – the World’s Cheapest 3G Phone

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Nokia 2730 ClassicWell, with the slew of nameless China-made dual SIM handsets with 3G, this may not be true for long.  But among the big five names in mobile phones (i.e. Nokia, Motorola, Sony-Ericsson, Samsung and LG), the new Nokia 2730 Classic could very well be the cheapest 3G mobile phone alright.

It’s Nokia’s latest budget entry level handset in its Classic line.  Announced as early as May this year, Nokia has finally made the handset available starting this month at a SIM-free drop dead price of £79.99.  With most of the networks carrying this, you could get if for free with a 9-12 month contract that’s light on the pocket as well. It’s a great phone for the kids so you can get in touch with them at school or on a field trip.

Versatility on a Budget

The handset is a quad band GSM 850/900/1800/1900 and a dual band UMTS 900/2100 on the 3G with HSPA support for fast internet access speeds. The 2730 takes off with an updated feature set we have become familiar with the older 2720.  As a budget phone, don’t expect this to get high marks on the features department. But for what it has, it does so admirably well.

Nokia puts in extra features that give the 2730 real useful value for its intended markets. Nokia has the prudence to deliver only the specs that matter most at this price range.  There’s just a 2” QVGA TFT display supporting 256k colors that’s definitely what you expect in this price range. You get a simple 2.0 megapixel camera that supports QVGA video recording.

Internal memory is a meager 30MB but Nokia can squeeze in 1000 contact details that will tax even busy executives using higher priced phones.  You also get microSD support for up to 2GB.  The package comes with a 1GB TransFlash microSD which is good enough for all the MP3 files on road in a weekend camping.

The handset won’t be complete without multimedia features that start with a decent 2.0 megapixel camera that support QVGA video recording.  There’s no secondary camera though even if the handset support 3G calls.

Its upgraded feature set include a microUSB 2.0 port for fast data transfers and Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP for using wireless Bluetooth stereo headphones in a addition to a 3.5mm headphone jack for your favourite high fidelity headsets.

Like its 2720 predecessor, the new 2730 Classic carries the same Nokia Life Tools that include Ovi mail for fast and easy mobile emailing experience.  It also come bundled with Ovi application, support for Windows Live Messenger and Nokia maps that further expand the handset’s versatility on a budget.

Stand-Out Features

There is one feature that puts the Nokia 2730 Classic above the rest of budget phones flooding the market.  It’s got an impressive battery life from its standard BL-5C Lithium-Ion battery.  You get 7 hours of talk time on 2G networks and 3.3 hours on 3G.  Standby time is a lone 17 hours and you can enjoy 12 hours of uninterrupted mp3 music listening on a single charge.  This, together with its 3G capability, makes the 2730 classic a real workhorse for the masses without even feeling a pinch in the wallet.

Nokia-2730-classic-black-frontThe latest phone model from Nokia is currently stirring up a lot of excitement across the mobile world and justifiably so for it is 3G capable yet it sells for such a bargain, people can hardly believe their ears. The Nokia 2730 Classic is expected to retail for around 80 euros – certainly easy on the pocket. This device was launched together with two other budget friendly phones, the Nokia 7020 and 2720 Fold.

Nokia-2730-classic-blackThe Nokia 2730 is a great buy as it boasts of an extraordinary feature set – well, extraordinary under this price range anyway. Since it is 3G enabled, users can enjoy a rich Internet and e-mailing experience over this device. The Ovi Mail application is included on the 2730 so that e-mail is simplified and doesn’t require the use of a PC.

Nokia Life Tools also makes an appearance on this phone and you may be wondering what you could possibly use that application for. Well, the Nokia 2730 Classic is actually primarily geared towards mobile users in emerging markets. To users located in remote areas, specifically, this type of application can prove to be indispensable. For example, a farmer can learn of agricultural practices so he can improve his craft. A student who wishes to enhance his English speaking skills can access English language courses over the device.

Of course, let us not neglect to do a rundown of the multimedia features of the phone as apart from functionality, entertainment is also a standard when purchasing a mobile device. The Nokia 2730 is equipped with a 2MP camera. You can also perform video recording, streaming and playback on this unit. The file format supported by the video functions is 3gp.

With the music player, you can listen to MP3, MP4, AAC, MIDI, WAV, X-Tone and AMR sound files just to mention some. The phone also has a few games pre-installed into it which should provide sufficient alternative amusement.

Nokia-2730-classic-blackYou normally don’t see all three words – stylish, functional and affordable – in one mobile phone review, but then again, we are talking about Nokia here. The company is known for coming up with some of the most economical mobile devices out there without sacrificing functionality. Its latest, the Nokia 2730 Classic is priced at a very friendly £69 – yet this phone has full 3G support.

Yes. It is a 3G phone plus it also has HSCSD, GPRS, EDGE support so you just know Internet-based functions go very well on this device. Its applications are also very impressive. It is equipped with Java MIDP 2.0, Flash Lite 2.0, Windows Live Messenger, a full browser as well as Ovi Mail, Share and Contacts applications. The device operates on the Series 40 platform and allows for firmware update over the air (FOTA).

It is packed with numerous organisational tools which should make it a sufficient work phone. There’s a calendar, advanced contacts database, converter, reminders, notes and a lot more. Nokia made sure you will be able to keep in constant touch with your friends and family with this phone as, apart from e-mail, there is also solid messaging functionality incorporated in the 2730. You can send SMS, MMS and EMS messages. There is a distribution list function and the Nokia Xpress audio messaging technology. You might also find the integrated GPS of interest. It of course comes pre-loaded with Nokia Maps. Its multimedia features include a 2 megapixel camera, an MP3 player, FM radio and pre-loaded games.

The Nokia 2730 comes in a simple yet stylish design and is available in black and dark magenta. At 14.4 millimeters and 87 grams it is quite slim and light so it slips easily into the pocket.   Like the two other Nokia mass market phones recently unveiled – the Nokia 2720 and Nokia 7020 – the Nokia 2730 will be available for purchase during Q3 of 2009.

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009
Nokia-2730-classic-blackThe Nokia 2730 Classic is being advertised as the most inexpensive 3G phone from Nokia as it is expected to retail at around £69. 3G capability alone would already satisfy most people but of course, leave it to Nokia to take it a step further. Apart from keeping you fully connected – to the Internet, to your contacts – the Nokia 2730 also aims to keep you fully informed.

Nokia-2730-classic-black-frontThe Internet is a very powerful learning tool and Nokia’s goal is to bring this power to the hands of consumers belonging to emerging markets. First, it features the Nokia Life Tools which started off as a pilot endeavour in India. With this application, farmers are afforded access to information that can build skills and potentially, increase income. This information includes fertilizer and seed availability, farming techniques and the like. Students can also learn English through their device. All they have to do is access the English courses offered via Nokia Life Tools.

E-mail has become an indispensable from of communicating and with Ovi Mail, users can now easily set up and maintain their accounts directly through their 2730 device. Both Ovi mail and Nokia Life Tools are available on the Nokia 2730, without the need for a computer.
