Nokia’s N97 Getting a Patch

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Nokia N97 (1)Now, if the patch would be solving even a small portion of the many problems that plague the Nokia smart phone, this would actually be big news. But the fact of the matter is; the 21.0.045 patch for the N97 is nothing but a simple update that delivers kinetic scrolling and more stable voice calls. Aside from that, you still get to keep all that amazing freezing, crashing and slowdowns that have made the device pretty infamous to this today.

Kinetic scrolling at the very least makes the animation of scrolling around the interface smoother. And according to people who have tried the patch, it does do that, but not sufficiently so. It still lacks that smoothness factor seen in the visual quality of user interfaces on other devices.

In order to get the software update, users of the N97 have to hook up to the Nokia Software Updater as there are no direct links on the website to download the update for later installation.

Of the many Nokia devices currently, it is the N97 which seriously needs some hot fixes. While Nokia has only provided a small interface tweak, many are still hopeful that the Finnish company has not abandoned the Symbian smart phone.

Problems associated to the device include overheating (especially when playing music), freezing and crashing. There are plenty of bugs in the menu and overall, the phone is difficult to use with its many quirks and problems. Connecting to 3G networks is reportedly known to cause the device to crash and reboot in an endless loop. Some have also experience problems with the activation of backlights. The sheer volume of bugs has even prompted some people to create online lists of the problems.

Is Symbian Sinking? N97 and Satio are Suspended

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Nokia N97 (1)Before anything else, the N97 MINI is doing perfectly fine, and Sony Ericsson is still pushing through with the Symbian S60 based Kurara –and now, on to the news.

It seems like this last quarter of 2009 has been tough on Symbian, with rumors of Nokia and Samsung dropping the OS in favor of their new systems (the Maemo and the Bada, respectively) flying around to two major Symbian devices being pulled out due to software issues, the Symbian Os is starting to look exceptionally weaker compared to the Android OS and the Apple iPhone.

While both Samsung and Nokia have made a firm stand about their support for Symbian, the issues with the software is not as easy to fix.

Many users of the N97 have been reporting various system based errors and bugs that have been plaguing the device since its release date. There are even entire forums dedicated to the bugs and problems of N97 users –a testament to how unstable the system is. The big blow came as both mobile carrier Vodafone UK and distributer Electronista have stopped offering the device to customers. Electronista now redirects buyers to the more stable N97 Mini and Vodafone no longer lists the device.

The Sony Ericsson Satio is not doing any better. Despite the Satio still available on carriers, the retail version of the device has had many firmware based problems –many have reported power drains, loss of ringtones, lags and crashing. While SE’s marketing department says that they are confident that the problems will be fixed, no updates have been released. The only saving grace for Symbian here is that the problem seems to be linked to the SE skin used in the device (carriers used their own skins for the Satio and those devices are not having any problems).

It certainly does not look good that two Symbian devices have been suspended from sales.

N97 Wins Asia Mobile Awards’ Best Broadband Device

Friday, November 20th, 2009

Nokia N97 MiniThe results of the Asia Mobile Awards and the Mobile Innovation Grand Prix – Asia Tournament are finally out. Nokia’s N97 Mini won the “Best Mobile Broadband Handset/Device”. It comes as to no surprise that the N97 won this category. Thanks to excellent design aesthetics and functionality, the N97 is truly an impressive mobile phone.

The N97 was first announced in December 2008 and it was considered as the closest bridge between a computer and a mobile phone. When it launched mid 2009, the phone took everyone by surprise with its amazing design and number of features.

This award winning mobile phone comes with Quick Office, Adobe Reader, Boingo and JoikuSpot Premium. Adding more functionality is the proprietary Ovi apps such as Ovi Maps and the Ovi store.

To top it, the processor was an ARM1 434MHz core that despite the seemingly slow speed, delivered a smooth and fluid browsing experience (it also helped that the RAM was a good 128MB). The internal storage was a huge 32GB. Digging further on its plus points, this 3G phone supports full broadband capabilities as it also has access to GPRS, EDGE and WiFi (including WEP and WPA security). Now the imaging part made waves as the 5 mega pixel camera was impressive at the time of its release.

Overall, the N97 provided a huge range of features and adaptability thanks to the hardware setup. Physically, the device looks amazing too, as when the device is folded out to reveal the screen and the full QWERTY keyboard, it closely resembles a small computer to anyone’s delight.

Other winners of the Asia Mobile Awards are Huawei and Grameenphone for the “Green Mobile Award”, and Gameloft won the “Best Mobile Game Award” for Hero of Sparta. The “Best Mobile Music Service” award went to AMPed (by SingTel), while the “Best Mobile Enterprise Application Product” award went to Bangladesh-based Banglalink Jigyasha.

Nokia encouraged by increasing sales

Monday, July 20th, 2009

comparison1Nokia had been concerned that the current economic downturn would mean a decrease in phone sales with cutomers tightening their purse strings in anticipation of a dark financial future. The Finnish phone manufacturer Nokia has been pleasantly surprised however, by an upturn in sales and indication by a recently released sales list from Vodafone that this is primarily due to high-end smartphones like the N97.

The report from Vodafone shows that less than a month after its initial release the Nokia N97 is already topping sales charts for that network provider, already outperforming the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic. With a total of three Nokia phones featuring on the list, that also includes devices such as the Samsung S8300 Tocco Ultra Edition and the HTC Magic, Nokia are hopeful that they will be one of the mobile phone manufacturers that will fare better during this current economic slump.

While overall sales for Nokia are still down 15% from this time last year, they have seen a steady improvement from their low point 3 months ago. While Nokia sales are still declining in North America they are seeing a steady improvement in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

The recent list from Vodafone however, obscures the fact that the N97 may still be falling short of its archrival the Apple iPhone 3GS that saw a million sales in the first weekend of its release. A recent poll suggested that nearly 30% of phone enthusiasts considered the iPhone 3GS to be the must-have device of the summer, with only 10% feeling the same way about the N97. Mark Loughgran, managing director of Nokia UK, is not one of those people however, calling the iPhone 3GS ‘a disappointment’ that does not deliver with ‘performance and value for money.’ Loughgran goes on to point out that the new incarnation from Apple makes no significant improvements from its predecessor and is confident that Nokia is going to pave the way for future development.

Nokia-N97-In-a-league-of-its-ownThe lives of us techno-geeks are centred on two things: gadgets and the Internet and we are so pleased that Nokia has decided to hand us these two things in one plate with the new Nokia N97. When it comes to Internet-related tasks, the N97 doesn’t disappoint.

Viewing websites on the N97 is a delightful experience. You can use the touch controls and the QWERTY keyboard to surf the Internet and pages are rendered quickly over the sizeable screen. The browser is enabled for Flash video so you know you get quality views – the same one you’d get when using a laptop or desktop PC. You can view and access content directly from the homescreen which is customisable. A very cool feature of the homescreen is that you can place widgets on it. You can also expand to full view, switch between public and private mode and tailor the placement of content onscreen as per your fancy.

Nokia-N971Email and messaging is also well-provided for on this phone. You can send emails with video, image, music and document attachments. Video calling is also possible on the N97.

Because of the integrated GPS technology and compass users are afforded the social location system where users can make their locations known via photo and video sharing. Users’ social networks are also automatically updated. Other features of interest are that the Nokia N97 is incorporated with the N-Gage technology so gamers will definitely like this unit. The N97 also offers enhanced video capabilities where it sports a video hub where you can easily access and enjoy your video experiences.

These are just some of the highlights of the phone and with all the other features, it can be said that the N97 is a worthy adversary for the Blackberry Storm and even more superior to the Samsung Omnia HD. Release of the N97 is slated for May and prices are pegged at almost £500.

Nokia N97: All-in-One Gadget

Friday, June 19th, 2009
Nokia-N97-reviewedThe eagerly-awaited Nokia N97 is filled with so many outstanding features that it makes you wonder if there’s anything that this phone can’t do. With the N97, it is not a question of what features you will get but more like, “What will you do first?” It’s like stating that everything you could ever want or need on the phone is already there, it’s only a matter of choosing which one to play around with first.
N97-blackIt is indeed proving to be an all-embracing device. To begin with, you can fully enjoy web browsing with WLAN and HSDPA connections. Video and photo sharing is also a breeze with Ovi Share. Web pages are rendered quickly and accurately as the unit has support for Flash, Flash video and JavaScript. To add to your viewing pleasure, Nokia outfitted the N97 with an angled 3.5 inch display – kind of reminiscent of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 or the T-Mobile G1 phone.
Even socialization is covered by the N97. You can directly update and visit your Facebook accounts, connect with your friends, stay up to date on events and a lot more. This model also provides superior navigation with its integrated GPS and A-GPS which you can load with Nokia Maps. The unit is equipped with a compass and accelerometer so that it adjusts display orientation accordingly.
Multimedia features are also impressive. The N97 showcases video capabilities where you can access the video centre so you can easily share, stream, download, and playback among others. The phone is outfitted with a 5MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics so you can record high quality videos. You can listen to your favorite tunes with the music player or through the FM radio. Gaming and photography are other tasks that you can do with the N97 and of course, communications.

The Nokia N97 is scheduled for release this May and is expected to cost around 550 euros.

Nokia’s New Flagship Product, the Nokia N97

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009
NokiaN97It is easy to see why the Nokia N97 is being touted as Nokia’s new flagship Symbian 60 phone. The NSeries phones of Nokia have always stood for advanced technology and the N97 takes the NSeries to even greater heights. This phone, which has been described as “multi-sensory” aims to connect users to the things that matter most to them. It may seem like a tall order, but it’s looking like the N97 is more than capable of following through.

N97-blackThe homescreen is the first indication that the N97 is all about connections. You will see contacts, media and content on the screen and these are accessible with a simple touch of a finger. To top this off, you can personalize your screen to include widgets of your favorite applications and social networking sites.

The Nokia N97 affords users enhanced browsing experience. The huge, high-resolution tilt screen and QWERTY keyboard make for easy surfing and webpage viewing. Alternatively, you can also use the virtual touch functions. Of course, the heart of the N97 Internet experience is its fast connectivity options. It also provides support for HTML, Flash, Flash video and JavaScript that further optimises page rendering.

This mobile phone boasts of up to 48 gigabytes of memory so you can store as much content as you like. The N97 is also an exceptional music player as it allows for over 24 hours of playback time. You can access the Nokia Music Store for your varied listening needs. The N97 is outfitted with a 5MP camera with Carl Zeiss optics so you can capture high quality images.

Although the N97 has a lot in common with the HTC TyTN II and the T-Mobile G1 when it comes to looks, it could be that the features found on these two may not measure up to the N97’s. Nokia is expected to release the N97 sometime this May with a price of £467.

It’s a Phone…It’s a Smartphone…No, it’s a Computer!

Saturday, June 13th, 2009
Nokia-N97Technophiles all over the world are already drooling over what Finnish mobile giant Nokia is referring to as a “mobile computer.” The soon to be released Nokia N97 is packing a multitude of features that can only be referred to as revolutionary. Many people are noticing the similarity with the iPhone but Apple’s flagship product may, for the first time in years, be in for some serious competition.

Oddly enough though, even with that prominent screen, Nokia isn’t marketing the N97 as a touchscreen phone – more like an all-inclusive, pocket computer. For starters, browsing over the N97 is akin to surfing the Internet on a PC. Yes, it’s actually that seamless, and why not, when it has a highly efficient integrated web browser plus it runs on the S60 fifth edition platform.

Nokia-N97-guyIt can download pages in speeds that have yet to be matched by any other smartphone in the market. It has HTML, JavaScript, Flash and Flash video support. The web browsing experience is of course enhanced further by the 3.5 inch display with 640 x 360 pixel resolution. Its display is slightly larger than the Blackberry Storm’s but the N97 is actually lighter. Access to social networking sites is also extremely convenient as navigating the user interface is so effortless.

The Nokia N97 is backed by an impressive 32 gigabyte internal memory which you can still expand for up to 16 gigabytes more utilizing the memory card slots of the unit. Other features that add to the wow factor of this phone are its integrated GPS and A-GPS receivers. Additional connectivity options, as if the unit needed it, are WiFi and Bluetooth.

You can watch videos on the screen or on TV via the TV Out element. Music and audio are also covered as well as photography with the phone’s 5MP camera. We can expect Nokia to release the N97 this month at an estimated price of £490.

Nokia N97: A Computer that You Can Pocket

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009
N97-blackLooking over the features of the Nokia N97 one would think it’s a computer that you can slip into your pocket. The unit hasn’t yet been released into the market and already it has been getting rave reviews from those who have gotten a sneak peek. The N97 provides premium browsing with Nokia executives claiming the experience as similar to surfing over a desktop or laptop. If this is indeed true, then the N97 takes mobility to even greater heights. With this feature alone, the N97 could give such phone models as the Blackberry Storm and Apple iPhone a run for their money.

Nokia-N97-guyLet’s talk software and applications for a moment. The N97 is a Symbian 60 fifth edition unit so you get firmware over the air capability as well as software updates. An exceptional addition is the social location application which enables intuitive location identification so you can update social networks automatically and share your location with your friends.  This is courtesy of the N97’s integrated A-GPS and electronic compass.

Video and audio capabilities are also best-of-class. You can control listening presets directly on the homescreen and this phone is loaded with the “Comes with Music” feature. You can store as many songs as you like as the Nokia N97 boasts of a 32GB memory. You can also rip tracks by way of the Nokia Music Manager. The Nokia N97 offers seamless downloading and streaming of videos. You can watch your favorites on the 3.5 inch screen or on the TV element. The 5MP camera can be used to record videos as well as take photographs.

The homescreen makes navigation a delight and a very cool feature is that with the N97, you can personalize your screen with widgets. Users have access to the Nokia Store, Nokia Maps and N-Gage. Expected date of release is this May and the N97 will come at a price tag of about £490.
