Samsung prepping 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab?

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Samsung has made it clear in no uncertain terms that it intends to dominate the tablet world in much the same way it has been dominating the world of mobile phones, namely the high end smartphone market thanks to its Android driven Galaxy S line.
With Galaxy Tab sales totaling 2 million as of last December, it is clear to see that there is a huge market for slate PCs and with Apple currently being its only major competitor, Samsung is bent on making sure that it gets certain that it stays ahead of the curve.

Already the company has gone ahead and updated the Galaxy Tab to play more nicely with such competitors as the soon to be released Motorola Xoom tablet. That said, the company has hinted that it plans to release devices in many different form factors much like what Motorola has planned as well, so it should come as no surprise that the latest rumors claim that Samsung will be bringing an 8.9 inch tablet with Android 3.0 to the market next month.

So fat we have no other information on said device but it could sport 4G as well on networks as Verizon and Sprint in the U.S and possible HSPA and HSDPA in Europe as well as the United States. If this is the case it would fit perfectly between Samsung’s new Galaxy Tab 10.1 inch tablet and their smartphones, perfect for those who want more screen real estate than what is found in the average smartphone but not interested in something as big as an iPad or Xoom tablet.

If this is the case, the launch could coincide with Apple’s iPad 2 which will be announced March 2nd at a special event in San Francisco.

Tablets: the Running Score

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

The mobile phone industry has been invaded by new type of device: touch screen tablets. Oddly enough, these devices do look a lot like oversized smart phones –but what is more important is how they function and many would have to admit, the significantly larger screen certainly helps. Here’s a quick round up of all the ones available and ones that we know are worth looking forward to.

First is the Apple iPad. No mention of tablets is complete with this one. Not only was Apple the first on the scene (for several months, they had monopoly of the industry), but they also set a pretty good bar. The touch controls are smooth and accurate, the battery life is impressively long (10 hours straight usage), and the weight is pretty light for its size. Expect your limbs to get a little sore holding this up for hours though; the 9.7 inch touch screen does get a little weighty.

We are certainly looking forward to seeing the iPad 2 when it finally comes out. Rumors are saying that it will be sporting a smaller screen (perhaps to compete with the new Android tablets). In any case, the device is confirmed to be packed with a digital camera. The only thing missing here is Flash support.

Flash however, is present in both the BlackBerry Playbook with its QNX operating system and of course, the Android operating system. While it is not confirmed if the QNX Flash support still needs a patch, we do know that the Android 2.2 Froyo is made Flash-ready.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Motorola Stingray are current the front line tablets for the Android, with the still unveiled Stingray promising to give the iPad 2 a serious competition. While the Android lacks the massive game library of iTunes, the device shines in all other functions –especially with eBook reading as the smaller 7 inch touch screen is proving to be optimum ergonomic size for tablets.

Today’s Top Mobile News Stories

If you still have not been able to buy a smart phone, there is no longer any excuse for not going to the closest mobile store. According to reports, Phones4U has finally opened their 500th store and that provides the UK with more than enough phone stores to shop and choose from. It has also been stated that by next year, four more stores will be added to the list.

HTC has confirmed that they will be working closely with Carphone Warehouse in terms of distribution of their newer handsets. So far, no exact details have emerged, but it is quite possible that we will be seeing some exclusive deals in terms of special color themes or even special prices for HTC’s smart phones.

A study has shown that the Android smart phone users are the heaviest users of the internet. The study reveals that the largest amount of data used by a mobile browser happens when the platform is the Android operating system. While the iOS may offer more paying customers, the Android market has a much higher download rate.

Best Buy is letting people try out the Apple iPhone 3G for free for a single day. While this may seem like an interesting promotion, this is nothing more than an extended phone promotion. Had they chosen to apply this to a newer piece of technology, then we could expect plenty of gear heads doing barrel-rolls of delight.

Samsung’s P1000 Galaxy Tab smart phone is now out and if you get one before February 28 of next year, then you will enjoy about 200 Pounds worth of free media from Samsung’s associates. Over 50 songs, 15 movies, 3 eBooks and 7 games (users will get to choose which content) await those who are going to go for the touch screen tablet this holiday season.

Tablets: Not the Way to Go

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

If you plan on doing some shopping for electronic devices this coming holiday season, you might want to go easy on your budget for a bit and avoid purchasing the high end, branded tablets in lieu of the lesser known, yet equally functional low end ones. Such is the result of a recent study of consumer purchasing patterns and most importantly, price comparison.

But what is wrong with the Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab and the Apple iPad? Indeed, the two tablets are the best in the field. Surely one should not miss out on what is good.

The issue is not with the specs. After all, the Samsung Galaxy Tab brings with it portability, ergonomics and plenty of functionality thanks to the Android operating system. With this, the tab can do everything that the iPad can, and then some features such as a camera and Flash support makes the web experience on the Tab even better than Apple’s premiere tablet device.

While the iPad cannot offer a better browsing experience –which is quite important for a tablet device, the fact is that the iTunes store simply has a better lineup of games. In this regard, there is no doubt that the entertainment value of many amazing games such as Namco Bandai’s Katamari Damacy and Ridge Racer easily surpass the offers on Android’s App Market.

Are these devices not worth the price tags? Plenty of consumers certainly think so, in fact, many feel that the iPad should not even pass the 400 Pound mark in terms of price (it currently retails at around 600 Pounds).

In many ways, the high end tablet industry is facing the same conundrum that the Sony Playstation 3 also handled a couple of years ago. It is a device that features next generation hardware in an industry that cannot sustain the price. Following that example, we can most likely expect a better priced, yet equally well equipped tablet to come out within the next couple of years.

All the New Handsets: Today’s Highlights

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

If you have been planning to grab a new phone this holiday season, either for yourself or as a gift, expect to have plenty of choices. And the most recent launches of today should still count in the list even if the holiday season still has a few weeks before it arrives.

First off, tablets. Not exactly mobile phones, but equally as impressive; the Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab is one of the most recommended ones around as it delivers and excellent degree of functionality that is not even matched by larger and more famous Apple iPad. While the regular version of the Tab is available through various network operators, you can also get a fully customized one from Harrods at almost 2,700 Pounds. This expensive tablet is loaded with Swarovski crystals all over and is certainly something for those with less than practical plans in mind.

If you want something that is a little more sensible and practical, you might want to stick to the basic mobile phones that have been announced. While these would certainly not be good replacements for your high end smart phones, these two are certainly better alternatives when you simply need to have a handset around.

First off, Alcatel’s new Virgin Mobile devices, the OT-209; this is a cheap phone. And by cheap, we are referring to the fact that it is bought at a price tag of 99 Pence when you buy a 10 Pound top up. The handset manages to deliver a colored VGA screen, FM radio and even conference call capabilities.

Our other budget alternative is the T-Mobile Vibe. This handset is a lot like an LG handset, though this one comes from China based manufacturer, ZTE. The Vibe brings together a touch screen display and a physical QWERTY keyboard. This handset is available under T-Mobile’s pay as you go plans.

New Androids and Nokia’s N8 to Hit Stores Soon

Monday, October 25th, 2010

The Samsung Galaxy Tab is coming out for both T-Mobile and O2 UK. The big announcement from O2 has just been confirmed and they have stated that the device will be coming out in November 1. Those interested in the touch screen tablet might want to know that it packs a 7 inch capacitive touch screen display, a 1GHz CPU, dual facing cameras, and of course, Google’s Android 2.2 Froyo.

The tablet also supports Flash 10.1 so users can browse any website without any worries about the compatibility of the browser.

Vodafone has confirmed that they will also be launching an Android smart phone, the HTC Desire HD. This handset is basically a remake of the original HTC Desire that came out alongside the Nexus One (in the UK) and the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10. The updated version brings in a 4 inch capacitive touch screen display and a powerful 8 mega pixel snapper as well. Expect to see plenty of use of the handset’s HD video recording and playback features.

The Nokia N8 is also coming to Vodafone, O2 and Virgin Media as well. O2 has officially listed the launched date to be on the first of November, making the launch date just a few short days away. The phone has been delayed from launch since it was announced earlier this year.

Thanks to the N8’s 12 mega pixel camera and HD video features, users can expect to have plenty of fun experimenting on the phone. The Symbian^3 operating system will also be making its high end debut with the N8 as well.

Speaking of the Nokia N8, a specialized Virgin Media player app has been launched exclusively for the N8. Subscribers under VM getting the handset will find the app pre-loaded while those on different networks may choose to download the app separately.

Galaxy Tab: Oversized Android Phone to Launch on Nov 1

Monday, October 4th, 2010

To call the Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab as an oversized Android smart phone may seem a little goofy –but the truth is what it is, the Galaxy Tab is currently the largest Android smart phone that we know of.

Unlike other tablet devices that are being announced –as well as the Apple iPad, the Galaxy Tab has phone functions. It can make and receive voice calls and SMS messages; a feature that is lacking in other devices. This is actually a big difference in terms of hardware, though we seriously doubt the practicality of the idea. While the inclusion of SMS is pretty convenient, the ability to handle voice calls is not exactly something that we are sure we would like in a tablet.

After all, being interrupted from reading an eBook, watching a streaming movie or even playing an app game is acceptable with a standard phone -but not when you are handling a tablet. Still, it is an added charm; despite the fact that the secondary function is more suited to desktop devices.

In any case, the Galaxy Tab is confirmed to be available on store shelves by the time November 1 hits.

This means that fans of the Korean manufacturer will finally get to try out the powerful Android 2.2 Froyo running device. While we certainly will not recommend this device as a replacement for a mobile phone, it does an extremely satisfying job as a touch screen media tablet device instead.

It can handle eBooks, videos, games and a wide variety of other functions. Also, the pre-loaded Google functions also look amazing on the larger screen. Browsing through the content on Google Earth and Maps is simply breathtaking. The touch screen controls are also far more intuitive that fiddling around with a mouse.

With only a month away before the official launch, those planning to get this tablet better start saving up.

Android Tablets Invade the Tech industry

Monday, September 13th, 2010

If there is one thing about the Android operating system that we should all be familiar with by now, it the fact that it is one of the most adaptive and well distributed platforms to have ever existed.

Google has officially stated that the Android operating system has been designed with smart phones in mind. Not netbooks and not tablet devices. In fact, Google has stated that they are working on a platform specifically for the above stated purposes, which is mostly likely the Chrome OS. But that does not stop manufacturers from using the Android on tablet devices –after all, the popularity of the OS name alone is enough to sell the devices.

Samsung is actually taking a quick cue from Google –in the essence that the Galaxy Tab P1000 is not really a touch screen tablet. Instead, the device is an oversized smart phone. Thanks to the fact that it can handle voice calls, this tablet is making quite the stand among its competitors (or competitor, as the only other tablet available is the iPad). The 7 inch touch screen is noticeably smaller, though far more ergonomically sound in terms of use.

Toshiba is also jumping into the Android bandwagon and considering how well made the Folio 100 looks like, it is easy to see how the new tablet seems to be designed to take on Apple’s initial offering head on. Toshiba’s doing a play by play follow through so carefully that they even made two devices –one without 3G support and another with the feature. So far, only the non-3G version has been shown off.

Lastly, it seems that Motorola is also eager to release its’ own tablet device. Various sources have leaked the fact that a Motorola MZ600 tablet has been appearing though further details on the device’s actual specs have yet to be revealed.

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab Launching Soon on 3 Mobile

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Mobile virtual network operator 3 mobile has confirmed that they will be offering the Samsung Galaxy Tab on various tariff rates later this year. According to reports, the new touch screen tablet is going to be released pretty soon and so far, only 3 UK and Vodafone has confirmed to be offering the device when it is available.

Despite the seemingly low interest of network operators to offer the device, there is little doubt that the Galaxy Tab is a vast improvement over Apple’s own tablet offering, the iPad.

Comparing the two devices side by side is hard to avoid. After all, the two touch screen tablets are pretty much the only devices available on the market (not counting the tablet computers of course). While the iPad is making an advantage of its’ larger size and the fact that the Apple brand is more marketable, the Samsung P1000 Galaxy Tab focuses more on functionality and practicality.

The 7 inch touch screen on the Tab is notably smaller, but it also makes the device lighter and more comfortable to handle. When it comes to viewing media content and reading books, being able to hold the device comfortably for long periods is important –and this is one advantage that the iPad cannot beat. And of course, the 7 inch size is a lot closer to the actual size of most books –making the eBook experience on the Tab a lot more comfortable and easier to adjust to.

The Android operating system is also slowly proving itself as a much better applications platform than the Apple iOS. Despite the Android Market being much smaller than iTunes, the offerings are far more substantial in terms of content.

Of course, with the actual device not yet on shelves, it is not known if the Samsung Galaxy Tab can actually out sell the more famous iPad. But with the launch date drawing closer every day, we will certainly find out soon enough.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Price Tag: Budget Black Hole

Monday, September 6th, 2010

How much would spend on a tablet device? At a price tag of £679.99 the Galaxy Tab is hardly anything one would call budget friendly, but it certainly is a much better investment than the Apple iPad touch screen tablet.

The tablet industry is still small, in fact, without considering devices that are basically tablet computers, there are only two touch screen tablets available on the market: the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the much earlier released Apple iPad. In both cases, the devices have massive screens and custom user interfaces and operating systems. Though one makes use of the closed Apple iOS and the other is the open source Google Android.

There is no doubt that while the Apple is far more famous, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab is far more functional. Right off the bat, the Galaxy Tab is more portable than the iPad. While it may seem that the iPad’s large 9.7 inch touch screen display is an advantage over the Galaxy Tab, it is the opposite that is true.

The fact is that portable devices can only go so far with the screen. The Galaxy Tab emulates the size of a small paperback novel while the iPad seems more like a really thin almanac. eBook reading experiences aside, the fact is that portability is related to size.

Apps are a major factor when it comes to comparing the Apple iOS with the Google Android. As reported previously, the Android market is slowly growing, passing each benchmark count quickly in the past few weeks. The Apple iTunes store on the other hand, has a vast library of two years worth of apps and features. While the Android offers more practical tools and more free apps, the big value packs are more often in the iTunes store than anywhere else.

The bottom line here is that we would still recommend the Galaxy Tab over the iPad at any time. While Apple’s gadget is more famous, Samsung’s custom tablet is certainly a lot more functional and reliable.
