Mobile Choice Awards – Best Camera Phone

Monday, October 12th, 2009

Samsung Pixon 12The winner of the best camera phone at the Mobile Choice Awards this year is the Samsung Pixon 12.

Throughout this year, 8 mega pixel cameras in mobile phones have largely become the norm, and high end manufacturers are now competing against each other with bigger and better 12 mega pixel devices. The short list of camera phones boast as many mega pixels in some cases as professional quality SLR cameras, so they were compared in the fields of speed and how well they handle. A guest judge, professional photographer Stefan Klenke, even compared the mobile phones against dedicated cameras – and still Samsung‘s Pixon 12 was the clear winner.

The Samsung Pixon 12, which was the world’s first 12 mega pixel camera within a mobile phone, won not only because it has more mega pixels than were previously thought possible, but also because overall it was the best complete handset when it came to taking photographs.

The Samsung Pixon 12 has a good feed to its camera, as well as good, strong, action, macro and flash capabilities – it is the perfect mobile phone for people who are often out and about and find themselves wishing they had a camera on them; it’s quality is easily good enough that you can snap the sunset, or just take a picture with your friends face book; we would even trust it to take photographs at an important event, like Christmas with the family, or a friend’s wedding.

This impressive model does make us wonder; will we eventually see the day when cameras and mobile phones are no longer available as two different things? It might sound far fetched, but once they manage to cram a 24 mega pixel camera into a handset, well, we wont be carrying our cameras around any more.

The Samsung Pixon 12: A Mobile Even a Photographer Will Love

The latest mobile device from Samsung is generating a lot of interest as this phone is reportedly the first of its kind to be released into the market. The Samsung Pixon 12 sports a 12MP snapper – the largest capacity camera on a phone, so far. Now by no means are we saying that the snapper on the Pixon 12 is anywhere near the quality that a high-end photographer’s camera offers. But if the Samsung Pixon 12 is indeed all it’s touted to be, then even a photographer won’t mind using the camera phone to snap pictures.

First of all, the camera has a wide angle lens – 28 millimeters to be exact. This enhances perspective considerably plus it allows for as much of a scene to be captured by the camera. The camera’s Xenon and power LED flash will also undoubtedly contribute to image quality.

Samsung pulled all the stops with this mobile’s camera. It boasts of touch AF tracking where you can tap on a part of an image to choose that as a focal point. The phone locks on that area so that you don’t have to re-tap on the image in case your hand shakes when taking pictures. The Smart Auto function makes the camera an “intelligent” tool as this enables the phone to adopt to background and lighting conditions so that results are still of high quality.

Organising and managing your images has never been easier on the Pixon 12. You can sort your photos in different ways: by file name, rating, tags and time. Multiple selection is a handy application as you get to extract images by group to view or edit them. This beats having to look at images one by one. Because of these features alone, I may have to give up on my previous Samsung favourite, the Omnia. I wonder how the Sony Ericsson Satio will do when pitted against the Pixon 12?

The Samsung Pixon 12: A Premium Camera Phone

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009
Pixon-12Two of the most important (or most coveted) gadgets these days are the mobile phone and the digital camera. Now the financial crunch has affected everybody and even certified technophiles are forced, from time to time, to choose between the two. You either choose to spend your hard-earned money on an excellent mobile or a first-rate camera. Or you get both gadgets but chances are, one of them will have to be of inferior quality as you can only stretch the pound so far.

Well, Samsung comes to rescue so that you no longer have to be torn between the two gadgets. The Samsung Pixon 12 is a mobile that boasts of a 12MP camera and industry watchers are saying that because of this capacity, owning the Pixon 12 is akin to having a dedicated digital camera as well.

The Pixon 12 is the first phone to offer 12MP capacity. Sony Ericsson earlier announced the Idou, now renamed Satio as also being of 12MP capacity but as it turns out, Samsung will release its device earlier (this June) so it appears Sony Ericsson will have to settle for second place on this one.

Apart from megapixel power, the Pixon 12’s camera also presents innovative features such as tap to focus, auto mode which automatically lets the camera harmonize image capture settings with existing lighting conditions and face recognition features.

Applications you will find on this phone are Share Pix, which allows you to upload your photos into Facebook, Picasa, Flickr and so on. There’s also a multiple sort feature where you can organise your images by file name, tags, time and rating. Multiple selection allows you to open up a group of images for easier viewing and editing as opposed to looking at images one at a time.

If the Pixon 12 delivers on its promises, it could be as widely accepted as the previous Samsung offering, the Omnia HD.

Capture the Samsung Pixon 12

Samsung-Pixon-12-FrontSamsung seems to be on a roll these days, coming up with excellent phones during past year or so. After the Samsung Tocco Lite and Omnia HD, here comes yet another potential hit from the Korean mobile giant. The Samsung Pixon 12 boasts of a 12MP snapper. The camera feature alone presents exciting possibilities for mobile phone users.

It’s true that megapixels alone isn’t a guarantee that your device will yield great results but naturally, because this is a Samsung device, the Pixon 12 comes with a host of innovations that ensure you take excellent quality images. First, the camera’s hardware boasts of a 28 millimeter wide-angle lens, impressive Xenon flash and an LED flash.

Pixon-12The camera also showcases touch auto-focus tracking, Smart Auto mode and face detection technologies. Touch auto-focus allows users to select an area of an image as the focal point. The phone locks into this central area even as you move your device about. Smart Auto tells the phone to adjust settings in accordance with ambient conditions such as background and lighting quality. Detection also includes smile and blink recognition so you don’t have to worry about taking bad portrait photos.

Apart from taking still photos, the Pixon 12 also has video recording functions capturing clips at 30fps. The device is an excellent social networking tool as it allows you to share your pictures with your contacts in Facebook, Flickr, Picasa, Friendster and so on.

And in case you were wondering if you’ll be able to get any assistance with work on this mobile, the answer is yes. The Pixon 12 is 3G enabled plus it features a WAP browser for premium Internet surfing. E-mail is also available. There are also productivity tools such as voice memo, voice dial, document viewer and organiser amongst others. If you are excited about getting the Pixon 12, have no fear, the device will be available for purchase this June.
