Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA X10 has no Multitouch

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10When you have a large touch screen, an Android operating system and a high speed 1GHz Snapdragon processor running under the hood, it is pretty much expected that such as smart phone would have as simple a function as multi touch functionality. Or so we thought.

Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA X10 smart is a high end device in terms of hardware. While the OS itself is a little old (the Android 1.6 Donut is just so last year), it has already been confirmed that an update to the OS would be indeed by arriving –but only in September, which means that the wait will be a pretty long one.

Anyway, it is not really that big of a deal that the phone does not have multi touch. It already comes with impressive hardware features. However, there is also the fact that you could always just opt to buy the HTC Desire, HTC Legend, the Samsung Galaxy S or the Nexus One –which means that SE’s move to place the XPERIA X10 at such a disadvantageous position would certainly be something that could spell doom for the mobile phone.

The X10 comes with a nice big 4 inch touch screen display, an 8 mega pixel camera and as mentioned, the 1GHz QSG8250 Snapdragon CPU. New to the device is the Timescape user interface for contacts which allow users to consolidate message archives and other relevant pieces of information in an easy to use and understand interface.

If the X10 may be off your budget, you might want to hold out for a little while longer and wait for the release of the X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro smart phones. The devices are not as powerful as the original X10, but come in a smaller and more budget friendly package.

Is Sony Ericsson Back for Good?

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro (2)Mobile phone manufacturer Sony Ericsson has been in pretty bad straights in the past few months that it is almost hard to believe that the company is once again making a profit. According to reports, the first quarter of 2010 ended with Sony Ericsson making almost £20 million in profit. This is a big improvement of last year’s severe negative turnaround.

Of course, this is just the tip of the iceberg. If Sony Ericsson will truly become the giant that it was meant to be, it will have to go through a whole lot more than just one quarter. As such, there are several important factors that would contribute to the success of the company.

First off, the man at the helm, Bert Nordberg; the CEO of the Swedish Japanese joint venture has been pretty brave and optimistic in his recent interviews, stating heavily that there has been plenty of progress internally and that the company would keep pushing through as it is already on the right track. Regardless of his vague claims, it seems that Bert is the man for the job –successfully building up an excellent portfolio of devices.

The phone line up is definitely the main game for SE. With new devices such as the XPERIA X10, X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro, as well as the Symbian powered Vivaz and Vivaz Pro, the company pretty much has good devices to offer both the mid to high range Android and Symbian phone users. The Greenheart series remains as one of the most successful line of eco-friendly devices being manufactured. It has also been confirmed that SE is currently working on an upcoming WP7 device as well.

All in all, Sony Ericsson’s current road is not a downhill run. With strong competition for products and a very fast paced industry, SE has plenty more to catch up with before they can once again rest easy.

New Sony Ericsson Handsets Coming to the UK

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Sony Ericsson Vivaz 1Last February, the Japanese-Swedish joint venture showed off several impressive smart phones at Barcelona, Spain. Now, it has confirmed that several of these devices are indeed heading to the UK and that we can expect the first few phones to be in store shelves as early as April.

The Sony Ericsson Vivaz and the XPERIA X10 are expected to be released around mid April. According to reports, Orange has snagged a special all white version of the XPERIA X10 while Vodafone will only get the regular all black version of the phone.

Mobile virtual network operator 3 will be offering the Vivaz to its clients. 3 will be topping off the deal with a sweet offer for high quality music streaming on Spotify for just £10 a month. The Vivaz is a Symbian smart phone with an 8 mega pixel camera and 720p video recording capability.

Back to the XPERIA X10, this is Sony Ericsson’s first Android device on the market and it will come packed with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 4 inch capacitive touch screen and an 8 mega pixel camera. The device is also going to debut the Timescape and Mediascape tools to the public.

For a not-so-high end Android solution, Sony Ericsson also has a couple of other smart phones. Slated to arrive by May 24, the X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro are more than just streamlined and trimmed down versions of the X10, but they are also well balanced mid range smart phones.

The devices come with 2.55 inch capacitive touch screens, 5 mega pixel cameras and Qualcomm MSM7227 600MHz processors. The devices are expected to be available on retail at £300 for the Mini and a £340 price tag for the Mini Pro.

Two More SE Phones Coming Soon

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini ProSony Ericsson has confirmed that both the Vivaz the Elm are arriving sometime soon, though no exact release date has been given. It was noted back at the Mobile World Congress that the Vivaz might be popping up around the same time as the SE XPERIA X10 which places the Vivaz at a mid march launch date –hopefully, the same thing applies for the Elm.

For those who missed out on what these two phones are, here is a quick look at the Vivaz and the Greenheart Elm.

The Vivaz is a Symbian smart phone that was originally announced as the Kurara. It is one of the SE U-series devices is like an offshoot of the Aino and Satio series of devices. The Vivaz comes with an impressive 8 mega pixel camera that is perfect for taking high quality images thanks to its high native resolution and the help of autofocus and LED flash. It also comes with SE’s face and smile detection features.

Even better is the camera’s ability to take videos in 720p HD quality –you will definitely want to buy a high capacity memory card for this feature. Being one of the first smart phones to feature 720p recording, there has been a lot of interest in the Vivaz for quite some time now.

It has also been revealed that there will be a Vivaz Pro smart phone. The device will have the same specs as the Vivaz except for camera. The Pro will only have a 5 mega pixel camera though it will retain the ability to record videos in 720p format. This device will come with a physical slide out keyboard.

The Elm is one of the Greenheart devices announced last year (the other being the Hazel). Expect to see this eco-friendly candy bar device in store shelves soon.

Sony Ericsson Corrects Wrong Announcement about X10 Mini

Friday, March 5th, 2010

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 MiniSimply put, the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini will not be coming out by April 13, 2010.

Again: it will NOT be coming out.

Vodafone originally announced that the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Android smart phones will be coming this April 13. The news was quickly spread but added that little tidbit about the X10 Mini also being available earlier. This is not the case, and SE has pointed out that the rumors as well as the listing on the eXpansys website is erroneous.

Anyway, the XPERIA X10 Mini is actually the originally announced XPERIA Robyn. The device is already known to be the Mini version of the X10 early on. With the X10 being Sony Ericsson’s first Android smart phone, they have missed the market of mid range smart phone users since the X10 is a little too high end for the average person.

The Mini is about half the size of the original X10 but packs the same look and style as the rest of the XPERIA series. The device looks elegant and easy to use. When the phone was shown off at the Mobile World Congress, it showed off a new user interface not much unlike the Timescape on the X10.

The Mini will also be accompanied by the X10 Mini Pro when it comes out. The Pro is a special version of the X10 that comes equipped with a physical QWERTY keyboard.

Aside from the X10 Mini, Sony Ericsson also showed off a few other devices at the event. The Sony Ericsson Vivaz is the Symbian smart phone with the ability to record at 720p HD. The Vivaz Pro, like the Mini Pro is a second edition of the Vivaz that comes packed with a physical keyboard.

Sony Ericsson Expands Phone Lineup

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini ProThere are already plenty of high end Sony Ericsson smart phones to look forward to this year. But if SE has something missing, it is a decent series of smart phones for the mid price range market. Unlike Finnish manufacturer Nokia and Korean company Samsung, the Swedish Japanese joint venture has very few phones with low price tags; and the current models they have in that range could hardly compete with the WinMo and Android devices of other companies.

The only upcoming WinMo phone from Sony Ericsson is the SE Aspen. It is a Greenheart smart phone that features a full QWERTY keyboard and the new Windows Mobile 6.5.3 Maldives operating system. For the Android and Symbian markets, Sony Ericsson has plenty more to offer.

It has already been confirmed that the SE XPERIA X10 will be released this March along with the Vivaz. The XPERIA X10 is an Android smart phone that uses the Snapdragon 1GHz CPU while the Vivaz runs on Symbian 5.0 OS and has an 8 megapixel camera with HD video recording capabilities.

Adding to this line of mobile phones are the Vivaz Pro, the X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro. From what we have seen, the Pro editions of SE devices come with slide out QWERTY keyboards that will certainly attract mobile users who are heavy texters or email users.

The SE Vivaz Pro was previously announced as the SE Kanna (and the Vivaz was the Kurara). The device will have the exact specifications as the Vivaz with the exception of the 8 mega pixel camera. The Pro will only have a 5 mega pixel camera but will retain the HD recording capability.

The X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro are watered down versions of the XPERIA X10 (and roughly half the size too).

Sony Ericsson Robyn Revealed, Renamed as X10 Mini

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 MiniSony Ericsson has brought out a tiny device for a big surprise.

It is expected that the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 will be shaking things up for the Android community once it gets released this coming March. The Android smart phone has been in the news headlines since the XPERIA X2 got announced. Now, as the weeks draw closer to its release date, Sony has announced that the Mini version of the device will also be released soon.

The fact that the X10 would be getting a mini version was announced about a month ago when images and reports of the XPERIA Robyn popped up in the news. The device was literally almost half the size of the X10 and would deliver a trimmed down set of features that would help SE break into the low to mid range Android market. The X10 is currently SE’s first attempt at the Android and while they excel at making high end devices, they have to tap into the larger market to meet the profit the joint venture so badly needs.

The X10 Mini follows the original X10 in form and style. The visual elements of the XPERIA series are clearly evident in the Mini’s slightly curved buttons and the deep lines that follow its contours. Specs wise, the Mini is basically a watered down version of the X10.

Sony Ericsson is currently marketing the device to a younger generation of mobile phone users with the wide array of colours available. There is black, pearl, silver, red, lime, pink and white color variants available to choose from.

Aside from the X10 Mini, Sony Ericsson also revealed two more devices during the MWC, the Vizaz Pro and the X10 Mini Pro.
