The new TG01 was unveiled by Toshiba at a special Orange event last week and is available exclusively on Orange. The TG01 features a 4.1” resistive touch display employing a Toshiba interface over Windows Mobile 6.1. While many have complained that the Microsoft OS is outdated and does not support some of the features that its competitors handle with ease, the TG01 benefits from an impressive 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor that is certainly noticeable when it comes to video playback and smooth UI interaction. Toshiba have also promised to upgrade the devices to Windows Mobile 6.5 for free when it becomes available.
The TG01 features an accelerometer that provides some interesting gesture controls. You can answer a call by shaking the phone, and you can switch between applications by tilting the device left and right. The 8GB memory can be upgraded to 32GB with micro SD cards, which is good news if you wanted to put that processor and high resolution display to the test with your own video files. The TG01 supports a variety of media formats that can be transferred easily to the device through USB 2.0. The TG01 has a 3.2 megapixel camera, which is not the best on the market, but the phone is a slim 70 x 130 x 9.9mm and provides high quality performance on the move.
While the TG01 is certainly a powerful and sexy phone, many of its features are already on offer elsewhere. The UI is certainly one of the better interfaces to use Windows Mobile, and this is helped a great deal by the 1GHz processor, which is the feature that makes this phone stand out.
The Toshiba TG01 is available exclusively on Orange for £39.15 per month on a 24 month contract. Included in this deal is 1,200 free minutes to any network, unlimited texts and a range of Orange features.
